A group of Skyrim players is recreating the world from The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion as a mod for TES 5: Skyrim. With the release of the official remake of Oblivion, the question arose as to what would happen to the fan project. However, instead of a demand from Bethesda, there is a wonderful gift.
What kind of fan project is this? Skyblivion is a fan remake of Oblivion, created in Bethesda’s Creation Engine as a mod for Skyrim. The creators build upon the original title along with its DLCs, but also add more content:
- A new UI for better overview
- Improved textures and environments
- Expanded cities, dungeons, quests, characters, and equipment
- New expansions based on concept arts
Based on the new content, it is already clear that the game takes a lot of time. The project started in 2012. However, with the official remake, some problems arise now, which don’t seem to matter much.
Fans need not fear for their project
Why could there be difficulties? The fan game was actually supposed to be released in 2025. Now, with the release of the official remake of Oblivion, there would have been overlaps. These could lead to lower sales figures for the official game, as many players are already focused on Skyblivion.
Other publishers respond to such fan projects by asking the players to cease. An example is Activision. Here, all fan servers for Call of Duty were shut down, as fans suddenly received a cease and desist letter by mail.
However, Bethesda is not looking for trouble, but instead gives the creators of the fan game a wonderful gift.
What did they receive instead? As the team reports on X, Bethesda reached out to the fan project. But instead of a demand to cease development of the game, there is good news.

The remake will especially please MeinMMO author Christoph Waldboth. He returns to the original game every year because he particularly enjoys one aspect of it. In the Remastered version, he hopes to have just as much fun: For ten years, I have been playing the same game during the holidays, and it still feels like coming home.
