Fans of Wolfenstein have made it their mission to keep the F2P multiplayer shooter “Enemy Territory” alive for a long time. Now Bethesda is stepping in and even offering official servers for their loyal players to battle on.
What kind of shooter is this? Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory is an online multiplayer shooter that was released on May 29, 2003. In this game, two teams compete against each other. Depending on the game mode, the mission of each team is either to complete objectives or to stop and sabotage the opposing team.
Since its release, many shooter fans have enjoyed this game for good reason. It was made available for free, so you didn’t have to pay a cent and could download the game without any problems and get started right away. However, as with any game, the servers will eventually be taken offline.
“Enemy Territory” was no different. Therefore, fans of the shooter helped each other out by providing their own servers, allowing the game to continue living for a while.
Now, almost 20 years since the release, Bethesda has announced that they too want to provide official servers.
Free servers with original rules
What are these servers? Bethesda provides four official and unmodified servers. This means you can play the shooter in its vanilla version with all the known maps that were available at the time of release. The following regions are covered:
- US: Texas
- EU: Netherlands
- AU: Canberra
- UK: London
Additionally, you will only be able to play in the “Campaign” mode by default, where two teams compete against each other with eight players each. Team damage is enabled, so make sure your gun is only aimed at the opponents. Furthermore, there will be an anti-lag feature and no weapon restrictions.
What does the community think? Players celebrate Bethesda’s step. They reminisce about their youth and how much fun the shooter was. Reddit user Spodokom221745 says: “Oh man, I absolutely loved this game back then. Maybe I need to give it another try after all these years!”.
But new players also have the desire to try out the game: “I will probably install it and give it a go. I’ve never played it, but Dirty Bomb is possibly my absolute favorite FPS, and I’m curious to see how it compares.” says user Linkfromsoulcalibur.
How can I join the server? To do this, simply search for the server “id Software Official Vanilla Server – (Region)”. There will be four of them responsible for the respective regions. Now select one of them, and you’re good to go.
Bethesda is aware that the community has invested a lot of time and effort to keep the game alive with mods and servers. Therefore, the developers recommend that if you’re keen on the shooter, you should also check out fan creations. However, if you’re more in the mood for a nostalgic round of Wolfenstein, you can safely access the developers’ servers.
