The MMORPG Lord of the Rings Online (LOTRO) was completely down for a day after the anniversary update due to issues. Now the servers are back online, but players’ progress has been reset to the morning of the update.
What exactly do players lose now? Standing Stone Games is the development studio behind Lord of the Rings Online. They announced after the anniversary update that they had to reset the progress of the game worlds.
The progress of the content has been reset to the state of Wednesday, April 20, 2022, at 1 PM German time.
The servers went offline in Germany at 5:00 AM on April 21. Players who played between 1 PM and 5 AM the next day will therefore lose the progress they made in those 16 hours.
Why were the servers offline? When the anniversary update for LOTRO was released, there were numerous reports of missing rune-keeper satchels with legendary items. It appeared to be a major bug, which is why the game worlds were taken offline.
In the meantime, Standing Stone Games regularly released informational updates stating that they were working to fix the issue. They hope to be able to bring the game world back online soon.
The servers were brought back online after one day of downtime on April 21.

Is there a refund for content & progress?
How to get your lost content back: If you were missing rune-keeper satchels due to the installation of the anniversary update, you should receive them back.
According to Standing Stone Games, you will find the missing items upon logging into the game world. Progress that you lost due to the rollback will not be returned to you.
What happens with store purchases? If you made purchases in the LOTRO store while the servers were offline, your purchases will be automatically refunded, according to Standing Stone Games.
What happens to lost anniversary gifts? If you have already claimed your gifts for the 15th anniversary of LOTRO, you will receive them back, according to Standing Stone Games, the next time you log in.
Why is a rollback a nightmare for MMORPG players? A rollback is the worst thing that can happen to an MMORPG and its players because they lose invested time.
This represents a breach of the unwritten contract between players and developers of an MMORPG, wherein every progress made is permanent and “counts.”
Therefore, studios normally fight tooth and nail to avoid having to do a rollback, as it is the ultimate admission that something really serious went wrong and they had to resort to the extreme.
With the major update 33, all content in Lord of the Rings Online that was released between the launch of the MMORPG in 2007 and the release of the expansion “Helm’s Deep” will be free to play.
