Looting is one of the most important mechanics in Diablo 4 to advance your character. A special feature promises particularly many rewards, but you will have to engage in a rather unpopular activity.
In Diablo 4, you unlock season ranks by completing final dungeons and defeating hideout bosses at torment levels. Since Season 11, these ranks replace the classic regional progression, which only exists in the Eternal Realm. The ranks are tied to the season journey, through which you can gain a lot of extra loot.
What activity do you need to do for the loot? To collect the rewards, you must fulfill the bonus objectives of the season ranks. As a reward, skill points, smoldering ashes for the seasonal blessing, crafting mats, and gear await you. Many of these objectives can be completed almost incidentally, such as while slaughtering monsters in the Hell Flood, completing whispers, or collecting killstreaks.
However, there are also tasks in Season 12 that take place in the PvP zone, and many players simply do not want any part of that. Shortly after the release, an NPC had more heroes on his conscience than other players in PvP.
“They should completely remove the PvP part from the game”
What do players say about the tasks? The objectives related to the PvP zones are currently causing discussions within the community. Especially the mechanic of becoming the butcher there to eliminate enemies is under criticism. On Reddit, users like Mind-The-Mines complain that everyone just stands around in one area and spams area damage to farm the necessary points for transformation.
Other objectives in the PvP zone also receive poor reception. One user criticizes on Reddit the task of killing elite opponents in this area: “Try killing 250 elites in this zone when only 3–5 spawn every hour (unless you get lucky and an event spawns one). […] It sounded like a damn quick and easy task until I realized it isn’t.”
Other players add that they rarely, if ever, encounter other players in the PvP zone. Some coordinate and eliminate each other. The sentiment among some fans: The developers could actually completely remove the PvP aspect since it simply has no significance.
Many players simply ignore the bonus objectives tied to PvP since they are not “mandatory.” In the following image, you can see the optional bonus objectives for rank 6 on the left and the requirements for rank advancement on the right:

Bonus objectives do not contribute to the season rank
Why aren’t the objectives “mandatory”? You do not have to complete these bonus tasks to rank up in the season and receive rewards like loot pets, titles, and magnificent sparks. Completing tasks like mastering final dungeons and defeating hideout bosses is sufficient – that is the right side of the respective season rank.
The rewards for the bonus objectives primarily include crafting mats, fresh meat, XP orbs, and equipment items. While this is useful loot, it’s nothing you couldn’t do without since you can also drop all these things regularly during gameplay.
The bonus objective “Tortured Message” at season rank 1, which, according to the description, requires PvP content, can actually be completed entirely through PvE activities such as the Hell Flood or slaughterhouses. This way, you can obtain the skill point without having to set foot in the PvP areas.
Tip for the bonus objective “Tortured Message”: The bonus objective “Tortured Message” seems to be bugged for some players since the start of Season 12. Simply create a new player character and briefly talk to the NPC in Gea Kul where you start the seasonal quest line. This should trigger and complete the bonus objective – at least it worked for us.
For some bonus objectives, you also need to master slaughterhouses. In these special dungeons, you spend the entire time as a butcher, dismantling enemies with special attacks.
