Particularly stubborn Classic fans in World of Warcraft can be annoying – and they do their cause a disservice, believes Cortyn.
Every game has a small group in the community that is a bit louder and rowdier than the rest of the player base. Often, this manifests itself in forums, where one insult chases the next, or once again the developers’ competence is called into question, as well as all other players who hold a different opinion.
For me, this group in World of Warcraft is part of the Classic community.
Basically, I understand the desire for WoW Classic, and I am also itching to dive back into the “good old” Azeroth for a few days when the opportunity arises. Especially the original Scholomance (for 10 players) or Zul’Gurub make me nostalgic. But the insistence of some Classic fanatics really gets on my nerves. Because they apparently do not know when their opinion is welcome or helpful and when they should just keep quiet.
A BfA livestream overrun by Classic fanatics
This was particularly evident in the livestream last Thursday. There, the Game Director of WoW, Ion Hazzikostas, along with Community Manager Josh Allen, hosted a Q&A. It was already known in advance that this was a Q&A for “Battle for Azeroth.” Of course, this did not stop hundreds of Classic fans from flooding the chat before the start.
- CLASSIC WHEN
- CLASSIC NEWS NOW
- What about Classic?
- Give Classic or riot
Hazzikostas even explained at the beginning of the stream that they were working on Classic and making progress. Many of the job postings from the announcement would no longer exist because the positions had been filled. However, the stream was supposed to be about Battle for Azeroth, as announced.
Since the relevant people were understanding and realized that there would be no more information, they naturally remained calm – Just kidding. The chat spam continued throughout the hour.
Throughout the entire stream, the chat was practically unusable. Where meaningful questions about the stream or even questions for the Q&A were usually asked, a healthy communication was no longer possible.
I am absolutely baffled as to what these players want to achieve with this. I would be very surprised if Blizzard could suddenly prepare the servers faster due to the spamming of “CLASSIC WHEN???” or decides to spontaneously change the topic of the broadcast because a few loud voices want it that way.
The loud Classic fans can best be compared to the stereotype of another group. Let’s see if you figure out what I mean based on the example.
Person A: I’m really into Rammstein! What do you listen to?
Person B: I prefer German rap. And how about you?
Person C: By the way, I’m a vegan.
This is exactly how the Classic fans come to my mind. They bring up the topic even when it has no place in the current conversation.
Even in the official forums, almost every discussion is now attempted to be directed towards Classic. “Let’s talk about the Allied Races!” – “Who wants to talk about that? I want Classic!!!”
Yes, I am surely doing a disservice to many Classic fans who just look forward to the classic servers and do not stand out negatively. This text is not directed against you.
If you see yourself in the description above, then I have a request for you: Don’t be a vegan. Thanks.
