For fans of The Elder Scrolls, Morrowind is a special title. The atmosphere, the story, the music, for many, the entirety of the game just feels right. It is therefore not surprising that fans came together to create one of the greatest mods ever: Tamriel Rebuilt. Now, however, these developers fear that Bethesda might ruin their favorite game.
What is Tamriel Rebuilt? In 2001, fans founded the project “Tamriel Rebuilt”. This is a mod that aims to expand Morrowind. However, this is not a small mod but a large overhaul of the game.
Countless areas that, according to lore, are located around Vvardenfell have been added over many years. There are new quests, NPCs, and places for fans to explore. The modders have been working on the project for 23 years and have no intention of stopping the expansion of the universe around their favorite game.
Through the remaster of Oblivion, there are now uncertainties on the part of the modders. Morrowind is one of the iconic titles of TES; why has there been no remaster for it yet? For some of the modders, it is clear that Bethesda should refrain from it.
“A modernization of Morrowind would completely ruin the game”
What do the modders say about a Morrowind remaster? PCGamer conducted an interview with the developers of Tamriel Rebuilt. They do not respond well to the idea of a Morrowind remaster. To them, Morrowind is a title with magic in its original form, without flashy graphics.
One of the modders, Cicero, says: “I always feel happy when Todd [Howard] says he doesn’t want a Morrowind remaster, because that would just mess everything up… Modernizing Morrowind would just completely ruin the game.”
Grumbling Vomit, a developer who animates various creatures, adds: “I know I’m biased, but I’d rather have a finished TR [Tamriel Rebuilt] than Morrowind but with prettier pixels”.
Why could a remaster be problematic? The mood in the Tamriel Rebuilt team is understandable, especially when you are a long-time fan of a title and have been working on expanding it for over 24 years. For them, Morrowind is a passion that cannot be replicated with pretty graphics.
With over 201,000 fans on Reddit, the game also has a large nostalgic fan community that exchanges experiences about the game, even though it is already over 23 years old. The graphics do not matter.
Even though a graphics update would attract many new players, it could not capture the magic that Morrowind exuded in 2002. A remaster that does not do justice to the title is therefore possible – and that could disappoint many fans.
So far, there are no details about a Morrowind remaster. Fans can sit back and wait for further updates from Tamriel Rebuilt. The project is set to expand for many more years and may end in 2035.
