Dice has incurred some community backlash with a screenshot of the online shooter Star Wars Battlefront 2. The situation is referred to as “Droidekagate.”
In a new screenshot of the online shooter Star Wars Battlefront 2, attentive fans have spotted a Droideka and hoped that these robots would be introduced in the game. However, when DICE denied this, it led to heavy criticism.
A Droideka causes a small uproar
Droideka teased in the screenshot: DICE is currently working on the “Elite Corps” update for Star Wars Battlefront 2. This is set to release on August 29. The developers released a screenshot as a teaser. Naturally, fans paid close attention and spotted a Droideka in the background.
Droidekas first appeared in the film Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace, posing a challenge to the Jedi Knights. Since Droidekas were also included in Star Wars Battlefront II from 2005 and were very popular among players as a playable class, there was hope that DICE would also introduce the robots into the current game and make them playable.
DICE denies Droidekas: However, DICE initially denied that it was even a Droideka. It was just “debris” in the background. But a zoom on the spot in the screenshot clearly shows that it is a Droideka. DICE then acknowledged this, but stated that it was an unused static asset from the game that somehow made its way into this image.
The Droidekas were once planned but were scrapped, so they don’t even have animations, let alone a UI or abilities.
Fans are disappointed: Consequently, players of Star Wars Battlefront 2 expressed significant disappointment. The future of the game has now become less interesting. It is highly unprofessional to generate such hype initially, only to then provide a massive disappointment. The criticism has been quite harsh, and fans are now referring to the situation as “Droideka-gate.” It is not just about the Droideka itself, but about the communication with fans, which leaves much to be desired.
