In the latest major update of World of Warcraft, there are several chests that can only be opened by solving a puzzle. MeinMMO reveals how you can easily access the contents.
Which puzzles are involved? In Patch 9.2 of Shadowlands, the new area Zereth Mortis plays the main role. There are new “Proto Locks” in 5 different variants:
- Mezzonic
- Fugueal
- Kantaric
- Glissandic
- Toccitanic
Depending on the type, you must solve a different puzzle to access the content. As a reward, there are usually only cryptographs to enhance the abilities of the new console. Leveling the console also ensures that your special cryptographic equipment gets better, which is especially useful for second characters.
Additionally, the locks are often part of a world quest with additional rewards, and they count towards the weekly quest “Nested Patterns”. Although the game explains how to solve the puzzles, many players find them frustrating. However, with an addon, you can solve them with just a few clicks.
Which addon can help here? The Zereth Mortis Puzzle Helper provides you with the solution for 3 of the 5 different chests: Mezzonic, Fugueal, and Kantaric. However, these three are also the most annoying of the new puzzles, as you can end up in a dead end even after much thinking and then have to start over.
The other two variants you might already know from Nazjatar if you played Battle for Azeroth. However, there is also no way to block yourself here – experimenting or just clicking usually solves the puzzles.

Then, when you open a chest, you should see an overlay that shows you the correct solution. However, keep in mind that you usually also need to maintain the correct order. In the embedded video, you can see how it all looks:
Make sure that you still need 2 energy from Pocopoc to even start the puzzle. However, you can save the 7 additional energy to solve the puzzle immediately if you don’t want to think. On MeinMMO you will find more helpful addons for WoW:
Patch 9.2 is the last major content update for Shadowlands, and Zereth Mortis is presumably the last area of the expansion.
