What’s the deal with the Battle Pass?

In the comments, other users explain that Diablo 4 will be supplied with new content over the years. This content requires work that needs to be paid for somehow. And that is better through a Battle Pass than through other systems.
“I prefer that they bring a Battle Pass, cash shop, or whatever, as long as it’s cosmetic and doesn’t affect gameplay,” writes user PyrocXerus. If it motivates the developers to create more content and new expansions, he is okay with the Battle Pass.
