The Fallout series has always provided players with companions. In Fallout 76, these no longer exist in this form. However, one player has managed to tame an animal that is also one of the most dangerous.
What kind of animal was tamed? The player warbrand2 reported on the official Bethesda forum that he was able to tame a Yao Guai in Fallout 76. Yao Guai are mutated black bears and quite dangerous, especially for newcomers. As proof, he provided a screenshot.

How did warbrand2 tame the bear? According to his story in the forum, warbrand2 found a “crippled” Yao Guai near a forest. The animal was walking alone along a road.
Although the Yao Guai was marked as aggressive (red health bar), it did not attack warbrand2. Instead, the player approached with the “Animal Friend” perk and tried to calm the Yao Guai.
The result was a message that he had tamed the Yao Guai and can now send it to his C.A.M.P. to guard it.
What do tamed animals do? According to warbrand2, tamed animals can be used as guards in the C.A.M.P. A tamed animal can be sent to the camp after taming to protect it from attackers.
So they are not real “animal companions”. Whether they will become that remains to be seen. At least in the calmed state, they apparently protect players for a while.
There is no official response from Bethesda. However, there are already plans for the upcoming updates of Fallout 76.
You need charisma and perks: In Fallout 76, you gain most special abilities through perks, which you equip and manage through the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. system of Fallout 76. According to warbrand2, you need certain requirements to tame:
- the “Animal Friend” perk at level 3
- a charisma value of at least 6
- a specific Yao Guai
“Animal Friend” gives you the chance to calm low-level animals with a probability of 25% per level. Warbrand2 does not elaborate on why the increased charisma is needed.
The player also reports that he could only tame the “crippled” Yao Guai. These roam alone through the land and along the roads and do not attack you, even though they are classified as aggressive. You should not try with Yao Guai in a group.
Can other animals be tamed? The post in the forum has grown over time. The user BaseDweller has encountered a description of the perk in a wiki that also shows other animals as possible tamable guards.
Most of the animals are smaller ones like beavers, dogs, mole rats or opossums. However, the list also includes larger creatures that would make much more formidable guards:
- Deathclaws
- Giant sloths
- RAD deers
- wolves
- Brahmin
It is also stated in the perk description on the wiki that taming can happen with a low chance instead of calming. So far, warbrand2 is the only player known to have achieved taming. Whether all this is true remains to be seen.
