In Fallout 76 there are no companions like in the predecessors. However, players have now found a way to tame wild animals and keep them as pets. Learn here how to befriend the animals of Appalachia.
What’s the benefit? Tamed animals guard your camp by waiting for you at the C.A.M.P. and defending it against attacking enemies. So they serve as guardians and also as living friends when the wasteland of Appalachia seems too empty due to the lack of human NPCs. Moreover, they make cool companions for photos.
How to befriend Deathclaws and other beasts
You need these perks: The user THEANGRYHUSKY posted a thread on reddit describing a guide for “casuals.” According to him, you need the following perks and requirements:
- the perk “Animal Friend” at rank 3
- the perk “Wasteland Whisperer” at rank 3
- 6 charisma or more
- a ranged weapon
- at least 10% budget free in the C.A.M.P.
It is not entirely certain if you need both perks mentioned. According to another reddit user, “Animal Friend” and a charisma value of 3 is enough. However, since the guide is supposed to be “foolproof,” both perks are recommended.
This is how you tame animals: Once you have met the requirements, you just need to find a suitable animal that you can tame. Not every animal can be tamed. Certain “encounters” must occur.
Similar to the dangerous Yao Guai, which another player has tamed, you need stray animals that have at most half your level. You can often find these on the road connecting The Mire and Cranberry Bog and north of the Mire near a crashed Vertibird.
Once you have found a stray animal, you need to aim at it with your weapon by using the sights. Two buttons should now appear: Pacify and Tame. Press the button to “tame.”
The animal should now make its way back to your C.A.M.P. If it does not arrive, it was likely killed on the way and you have to repeat the procedure. This goes particularly quick with “server hopping.”
Which animals can I tame? There are a variety of creatures that you can tame. THEANGRYHUSKY has created an incomplete list of animals that have been confirmed to be tamable so far:
- Yao Guai
- Brahmin
- Deathclaws
- Giant Sloths
- Mirelurk Hunters
- RAD Frogs
- Mirelurk Kings
- the “burnt” versions of these animals
