Good news for Fallout fans: Fallout 76 follows the leveling system of its predecessors. There will be a S.P.E.C.I.A.L. system and perks, but with altered functionality.
S.P.E.C.I.A.L. and perks are retained: The well-known S.P.E.C.I.A.L. system from previous installments will also be part of Fallout 76. Your attributes will continue to be categorized into the 7 known traits and can be increased when leveling up. Perks are also retained, similar to Fallout 4, but with a different structure.
This is how S.P.E.C.I.A.L. and perks work in Fallout 76
The S.P.E.C.I.A.L. system is an integral part of every Fallout title and will be in Fallout 76 as well. Only the structure and functions differ somewhat from the familiar style based on previous information.
Leveling up for perks: When you level up in Fallout 76, you gain one perk point per level. You can invest these points into one of the seven S.P.E.C.I.A.L. categories:
- Strength
- Perception
- Endurance
- Charisma
- Intelligence
- Agility
- Luck
Every time you spend a point, you receive a perk in return. Unlike the table from Fallout 4, however, you can choose one of three offered “perk cards” that correspond to the respective attribute.
Perks are limited in use: When you’ve acquired a perk card, you may not be able to use it immediately. In Fallout 76, the use of perks is limited. You have limited slots available that you can fill with your obtained cards. Only the cards in the slots are then active.
While you can only have a limited number of perk cards active at the same time, the purchased cards remain with you forever. You can switch cards at any time during gameplay to utilize different perk combinations.
Perk cards can be upgraded: The perk cards give you bonuses on various aspects, such as targeting body parts. The cards have three levels, marked with stars. Higher levels improve the respective perk and make it stronger.
You can share perk cards: While you are in a group with friends, you can share your perk cards. This allows players in groups to specialize better and work together.
