Bethesda announced the new update Steel Reign at the E3 2021 for Fallout 76. Although the series usually relies on quite absurd humor, the new update for summer 2021 is unusually serious and dark.
What kind of update is this?
- Steel Reign continues the story of the Steel Brotherhood, which started with Steel Dawn in November 2020.
- You helped Paladin Rahmani and her team to re-establish the Brotherhood in Appalachia.
- However, at the end of the story, there is a dispute between Rahmani and her knight Shin about the direction the group should take.
- This dispute now escalates in Steel Reign.
The new summer update will be released on July 7, 2021, for free on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
How dark will it be? The trailer already reveals that the tensions between the two factions that have formed are growing. Shin and Rahmani are arguing about whether the priority of their mission is the protection of the people or the duty and cohesion of the Brotherhood.
With violence, gunfights, and distressing scenes, the factions fight through mutants and ghouls, but in many scenes, humans are also confronting each other. Apparently, a new war in the wasteland begins, which not all important characters seem to survive:
The features of Steel Reign
This is what the update brings: The reveal trailer already reveals two major features of the new update:
On one hand, Vault 96 will apparently be reopened, one of the raids in the game. The raids were closed until recently and players were speculating about when they would reopen. In the raids, there is particularly strong loot for tough challenges that require several players with good equipment and suitable builds to tackle.
On the other hand, you will be able to join one of the two factions, it seems. The trailer speaks of ‘Justice or Duty.’ With your decision, you determine the future of the Steel Brotherhood and thus one of the most important factions in the Fallout universe – or at least its fate in Appalachia.
What else is in Steel Reign? On the official Fallout website, Bethesda has already shown what content is still included in the new update (via bethesda.net). The roadmap mentions:
- Creation of legendary items
- legendary power armors
- unlimited ranks in the season
With legendary power armor, a long-awaited community wish will be fulfilled, which has been asked since the game’s release. So far, all weapon types and armors can be found as legendary pieces, only the popular power armors have not been, which has somewhat devalued them.
Bethesda also promises more content for 2022. Next year, new expeditions will come with ‘The Pitt’ – essentially dungeons for multiple players, where you have to complete various tasks against enemies with special modifications.
Together with Fallout 76, Bethesda also presented other games at E3 2021, including the highly anticipated RPG Starfield. Starfield is set to release on November 11, 2022, exclusively for Xbox and PC. You can find all announcements from Bethesda and Microsoft in the ticker:
