Right after the launch of Fallout 76 on Steam, criticism poured in. Now ratings are rising significantly. Let’s take a look at the situation.
How did Fallout 76 launch on Steam? Shortly after the Steam release and the launch of Wastelanders on April 14, the ratings of the online game were at only 34% on Steam.
Players with playtimes of only one hour and sometimes even less flooded the title with heavy criticism. Shortly thereafter, fans fought back and gave good ratings. It almost sparked a rating war on Steam.
The ratings are rising
What does the situation look like now? The rating of Fallout 76 on Steam is now at 67%. It has almost doubled. Positive feedback has been prevailing recently, and more people are rating it who have significantly more playtime.
What do the newer reviews look like? Fallout 76, including the Wastelander update, has been available for almost two days now. This makes the newer ratings much more representative of the online game. Here’s what players think about Bethesda’s online game now:
- DelCoer writes on Steam: “Let’s be clear! I can understand to some extent why everyone who hated this game from the start feels that way. But, the fact that everyone rides the hate train shows how society works. The game is solid and has extremely many stories to tell if you’re willing to read (like back in the day) or take the time to listen to the holotapes. Now, of course, also with NPCs through the Wastelanders DLC, which makes the game really great.”
- [U.B.E] Trwigggf explains on Steam: “Players can hate the game as much as they want, and to be honest, they are right about some points. But Wastelanders has changed the game.”
- AnT1IDoTe on Steam says: “This is exactly what this game needed. Yes, a bit of polishing is still required, but it’s a step in the right direction.”
- Zagganuth on Steam reacts somewhat cautiously: “It’s okay. The new content from Wastelanders definitely has a touch of greatness, with really fun dialogue options and some opportunities for roleplaying. However, the game is still dragged down by the base game Fallout 76. But if you liked the core game of Fallout 76, then you can get it.”
Watch out for the reviews!
Why are the reviews improving now? Players have invested more time in Fallout 76, which gives them more experience in the game. This leads to more informed opinions. And these go in the direction that Fallout 76 has improved with Wastelanders.
Andreas says: Anyone who wants to know if Fallout 76 is now a better game than at launch in November 2018 and wants to read reviews on Steam should focus on the newer ratings and especially look at the opinions of players who have several hours of playtime. Ratings – both negative and positive – with less than an hour of playtime after release should be viewed very skeptically.
MeinMMO author Benedict Grothaus has already looked at Fallout 76 with the Wastelanders update for 15 hours and reveals what he thinks about it.
