Bethesda is apparently taking a tough stance against trolls in Fallout 76. A group of particularly nasty characters received a severe reprimand after a naughty action.
What happened? A group of four people referred to themselves as “Gay Hunters” and “hunted” homosexuals in Fallout 76. The incident eventually became public and was reported.
Bethesda responded with a lifetime ban for all involved.
No “Gay Eliminators” allowed in Fallout 76
This is what happened: Although the Fallout 76 community is often praised for its helpfulness, there are also black sheep. However, some of these wrongdoers have behaved particularly badly recently.
A group of four players recently wandered through the Wasteland of Appalachia and hunted homosexuals. Their agenda was to “eliminate all gays.”
They repeatedly harassed at least one other player group and insulted them with homophobic slurs. Their task was to “cleanse the wasteland.” During their campaign, they laughed continuously.
How did it come to this? A wastelander asked another group of three players for some help. One of the three respondents complimented his appearance. The wastelander’s reaction: “I don’t deal with that homo crap.”
Soon after, he returned with a full group of four people and began to attack the trio. Since the three did not react, the four trolls did not cause much harm. The anti-griefing system of Fallout 76 prevented that.
The “Gay Eliminators” responded only amusedly that this was probably “the strongest faggot” they had ever seen.
This is how they were reported and banned: One of the affected players recorded the whole incident and eventually contacted Bethesda. There is currently no in-game reporting function, which may change with the upcoming patches for Fallout 76.
The player was directed by support to a page that did not accept his evidence. It took some time before Bethesda could take action. At first, this only resulted in a 3-day ban.
Shortly afterwards, Bethesda claims that they were able to take a closer look at the matter, possibly because one of the “Gay Eliminators” himself uploaded a video of his actions under the name “Cleansing the Queers”. The ban was then extended to a lifetime.
This is how the troll reacted: For the banned player, the whole situation was more like a role-play. He himself saw the entire action according to Eurogamer as just fun:
I don’t hate gay people. It was just a long night of fun and after our first encounter, we thought we’d mess with them a bit. You might call it evil, but I think it’s just childish immaturity.
I don’t regret the incident. I won’t apologize if given the chance. I don’t plan to do anything like this again, and to be honest, I didn’t even plan it. I just found them and decided to go through with it.
