Bethesda’s upcoming survival MMO Fallout 76 will be a purely online game without NPCs. Game Director Todd Howard confirmed this in an interview at E3.
Fallout 76 is a purely online game: Rumors circulated before E3 2018 that Fallout 76 was to be a survival MMO and not a classic single-player RPG. This has since been confirmed: Fallout 76 will only be playable online, there is no solo mode and not even NPCs (non-player characters).
Every human is a different player
Only mutants and monsters are NPCs: Todd Howard stated in the interview, “When you encounter a group of raiders, those are other players.” NPCs are just random monsters and mutants lurking in the wasteland.
How do I get quests and stories? So you can’t chat with NPCs and accept quests. However, storytelling will not be neglected. As is customary in Fallout, there will be plenty of computer terminals and audio tapes with which you can interact. This is how Fallout 76 intends to tell its stories and quests.
Is there really no solo mode? In fact, you can play Fallout 76 alone; you just have to take a little detour. Because the game offers solo play on private servers.
PvP in Fallout – No grieving, but a bit of drama
As is common in survival games, players are expected to be able to attack and kill each other. However, they do not want the ultimate PvP slaughter fest full of grieving. Unfortunately, Todd Howard has not provided concrete details about this.
Do you have to engage in PvP? They are currently working on balancing PvP and also want to find reasons to make PvP attractive. You can largely avoid PvP, but a little drama is still possible. So it seems you can’t avoid PvP completely.
By the way, if you want PvP to go totally overboard, you can just blow up your neighbors with an atomic missile in Fallout 76!
V.A.T.S. Mode despite being online in the game!
The well-known V.A.T.S. mode will continue to exist: Many fans feared that V.A.T.S. would fall victim to the online mode. This mode has always been present in the games since Fallout 3, allowing you to slow down time and target specific body parts of enemies with a hit zone system.
Thus, Bethesda cleverly combines the gameplay of a shooter with that of a classic role-playing game. Therefore, they want to stick to this in Fallout 76.
Only exception: The V.A.T.S. in Fallout 76 will operate in real time. You can’t really halt time when more than one player is involved. Otherwise, that would be a free pass for all trolls.
Fallout 76 is already set to be released on November 14, 2018. You can already sign up for the beta test.
