In Fallout 76, the cursed canvas strikes again for the third time. It has now come to light that there were indeed canvas backpacks, but not for the Collector’s Edition, rather special swag bags for influencers.
Bethesda finds itself in a situation with Fallout 76 that can be described with a football quote: “First we had no luck, now we’re also unlucky.” And it’s all about the material “canvas,”
This is the misery with the canvas so far:
- The €200 Collector’s Edition was supposed to come with a canvas bag. There was a bag, but it wasn’t made of canvas, rather it was made of much cheaper nylon.
- When a player noticed this, he complained to support. They then stated that the bag was not made of canvas for cost reasons, but rather of nylon. The good canvas bag was only a prototype. And that was that.
- After this response from support, a shitstorm broke out in the already heated community of Fallout 76.
- Later, Bethesda apologized for the statement made by the support employee and distanced itself from it. In reality, the bags were made of nylon because there was not enough canvas available. In return, Bethesda granted all purchasers of the Collector’s Edition in-game currency for Fallout 76 worth €5.
- This did not really improve the situation, but rather invited more ridicule. It was said: “Canvas, the rarest material on the planet.”
How Bethesda got into trouble for the third time
This is what has happened now: A YouTuber has now discovered that at a media event there was indeed a canvas backpack that influencers received.
This came to light when an influencer unpacked his “swag bag” in an unboxing video. This is what gifts from publishers for influencers are called.
However, these were backpacks and not bags. These backpacks were not made for the Power Armor Edition, but were presumably intended as gifts for YouTubers. However, they are made of canvas, which is the material the bag was supposed to be made of but which Bethesda could not source in sufficient quantity.
It is not known how many of these “good backpacks” are in circulation.
This does not change the fact that people are already furious with Bethesda again. This is now the third time there has been trouble over missing canvas.
This is what Bethesda says: Bethesda has apologized for the initial statement of the support employee (via Bethesda Support), who mentioned the cost reasons. Bethesda strongly distances itself from this statement.
The statements made by the person are “unheard of and inaccurate.” This was a contractual employee and not a spokesperson for Bethesda. And this person had no information about the situation when sending the email.
Currently, they are reviewing the process of deciding which items should go into a Collector’s Edition or not. They say they will do better in the future.
There is still no statement regarding the new incident around the influencer backpack.
