Today is Bombs Drop Day – The day when a nuclear strike destroyed the world. Or will destroy, since the day is still far in the future. Fallout 76 is already celebrating this day. MeinMMO explains what Bombs Drop Day is and what you gain from the world coming to an end.
What kind of day is this? Bombs Drop Day is October 23, 2077 (Eastern Time). That’s just a few hours away and is already being celebrated. On this day in the history of Fallout, the atomic bombs fell that destroyed the world.
In itself, this is a terrible day. However, for the world of Fallout, this day marks the beginning of all the games and other media that you know from the universe. Without this day, the entire story of Fallout would be meaningless.
That’s why the developers celebrate Bombs Drop Day particularly with events and discounts. But what exactly is it? We explain what the fall of the bombs means and how you can benefit from the catastrophe.
The End of Everything is the Beginning of Fallout
What exactly happened? On the morning of October 23, sirens go off in the USA announcing an airstrike. Many people think it’s just a test. Then the first bombs fall, both in America and in China.
Only two hours later, the Great War, as it is later called, is already over. A large part of the known world is destroyed, and humanity is mostly wiped out. The people who managed to find refuge in a (functioning) vault have survived.
The aftermath of the war includes irradiated wastelands, mutated humans, animals, and plants, as well as a world where survival is difficult. Even hundreds of years later, people will try to rebuild the world from the ruins – or loot what’s left.
What does this mean for Fallout? For the story of Fallout, this day marks the beginning of everything you can experience in the games. Some of the most important consequences of Bombs Drop Day are:
- the uprising at the Mariposa Military Base, where Captain Maxson decides to break from the US government after the war and found the Steel Brotherhood.
- the mutation of the Forced Evolutionary Virus (“FEV”), which is responsible for super mutants, mutated ants, and later even for Fire Beasts and the Scorched Plague
- Vault-Tec’s experiments slowly becoming clear – Most vaults were never meant to protect people, but for experiments on them
- Politicians protect themselves in special state bunkers but are partially killed by a coup. New people come to power and continue the destruction of humanity
- people begin to loot the wasteland for what’s left, killing and enslaving others for fun or profit. They roam the world as raiders for decades to come
- first new governments are established and try to rebuild the world – like the New California Republic or the new society in Appalachia
- important state institutions like the space agency are destroyed, causing people in space to miss the war, die in cryosleep, or crash land
The part that historically occurs first is, by the way, Fallout 76 in 2102 – or 2103 with the Wastlanders Update. In the survival MMO, you essentially play through the backstory to everything that happens afterward in Fallout.
