Since people returned to Appalachia, there are companions in Fallout 76 who can join you. Currently, there are five of these allies. We will show you where to find them and how to get them to join you.
What are companions? Companions are part of the NPCs in the new Wastelanders update for Fallout 76. They are special characters that you can unlock and then settle in your camp. In Wastelanders, there are five:
- Commander Sofia Daguerre, a crashed astronaut
- Beckett, the former blood eagle raider
- the raider punk
- the settler wildsman
- the guitar player (settler wanderer)
What do companions do? While the allies do not accompany you on quests and missions, they provide you with various quests and keep you company in your camp.
With the quests, you dive deeper into the story – which only applies to two of them:
- Sofia and Beckett are intended to encourage players to get to know them and have deeper personalities
- the wanderer, the punk, and the guitarist are just “good buddies” who hang out in the camp and provide some fun
Finding and unlocking all companions
For each companion, you must complete a task and then place a special item in your camp. However, you can only have one companion active at a time. If you want to be with someone else, you must dismantle the old item and place the new one. We will show you how to get each of the companions.
Commander Sofia Daguerre
Where can I find Sofia? The quest for Sofia starts with a distress call that you can receive near the Abandoned Bunker, which has a range that extends down into the Savage Divide near Foundation.
Roughly, you can orient yourselves by this: If you are in the Savage Divide, the distress signal can reach you. The associated quest is called “Ally: Crash Landing”.
The distress signal then leads you to that bunker, where Sofia is huddled injured in a corner. Talk to her, and she will tell you a bit about herself.

How to unlock Sofia: After your first encounter with Sofia, she sends you on a short quest line with various tasks.
Spoiler: Sofia’s quest and story
You are to retrieve some data from a crashed rescue capsule with which she fell to Earth. Sofia is actually an astronaut of the United States Space Association (USSA) and was unaware of the nuclear war. It is up to you to acclimate her to this new world and help her.
Once you have completed the tasks, you can place the “USSA Console” in your camp. Once this is ready, Sofia will be found in your camp and will provide you with more tasks.
If you interact with her more often and use some of the charming flirt responses, it’s even possible to enter into a relationship with Sofia.
Beckett
Where can I find Beckett? The quest “Ally: Narrow Escape” for Beckett starts near Rollins Work Camp and leads you to that location in the center of Ash Heap. He is likely to be the first companion new players encounter.
You should automatically receive the task when you visit the legendary merchant at her new location at Rusty Pick in Ash Heap. The signal can also be heard there.

How to unlock Beckett: Beckett is located in Rollins Prison in the large working machine at the corresponding camp. If you penetrate there, you will find the companion and can start the quest.
Spoiler: Beckett’s quest and story
During the quest, you will learn about Beckett and his past as a raider. You are to prevent him from being hanged as someone who turned his back on the gang. He commissions you to prevent his execution and eventually find his belongings.
During the quest line, you are to retrieve Beckett’s belongings from the smelters, after which you learn his camp item: Beckett’s Bar.
The Raider Punk
Where can I find the Punk? The Punk is one of the two companions for whom you need to do significantly less. You can find him in Crater, the raider’s camp located far north in the Toxic Valley.
He stands in the same building as the leader Meg. Upon entering the camp, keep to the right and go down the stairs in the building. There you will meet the punk and only need to talk to him briefly.
Without special skill checks, he will tell you after a short conversation that he prefers music to raiders, and you learn the plan for “Raider-Punk-Radio” for your camp.
The Settler Wildsman
Where can I find the Wanderer? Similar to the punk, you do not need any special prerequisites for the Wanderer. Head to Foundation, the Settlers’ base, and enter the main building. Take the elevator down.
Near the water, the wanderer is usually standing at the shore. Unlike with the punk, however, you need a skill check. Make sure that you have invested at least 6 points in Intelligence or 8 points in Luck in your S.P.E.C.I.A.L. stats.
If you pass one of the skill checks, you will learn the plan for the “Wildsman Chair,” on which the Wanderer wants to rest in your camp and enjoy the surroundings.
The Guitar Player (Settler Wanderer)
There is a fifth companion, a wanderer who entertains you in your camp with her guitar playing. Although you can also recruit her simply by talking to her, it is difficult to find her.
According to various sources, she has several points where she can randomly appear. Therefore, searching for her specifically is not possible. Three of the more precisely named locations are
- just north of the Overseer’s camp
- at Spruce Knob Lake south of Foundation.
- in the small camp/tower just after Vault 76 on the way to Waywards
On the “Map for everything” in Fallout 76, the Map76, there is an option to filter for her called “RETriggerCamp.” According to this filter, the wanderer has 51 spawn points across the map:

However, since it is not guaranteed that she will appear, it is probably better to just play and hope that she appears randomly. If you really want to recruit her, you should frequently visit these points through server hopping and be prepared for it to take several days.
Animal Companions to Tame
If you prefer to have an animal in your camp instead of a human companion, that works too. Shortly after the release of Fallout 76, players discovered that they can tame creatures like Deathclaws as personal guardians. You will need:
- possibly a ranged weapon
- free budget in your camp
- the “Animal Friend” perk at rank 3
With these requirements, you can have certain “encounters” with wild animals that only have half your current level. On a route between The Mire and Cranberry Bog, there are said to be particularly many encounters:
Once you find a suitable animal, you just need to approach it or aim at it with your weapon, if an approach doesn’t work. You should then have the options to “tame” and “calm”. Use “tame” and the animal will make its way to your camp.
While there isn’t a companion like Dogmeat from the earlier Fallout titles, you can have strong Yao Guais or Deathclaws as guardians. If you’re particularly mean, you can train your animal to use it in a deadly labyrinth as a trap for other players.
