After almost 9 years on the market, Fallout 4 is getting an upgrade. With this, you can finally play the game on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S at 60 FPS. Additionally, there are a few free goodies.
Bethesda announces:
- Just in time for the launch of the Fallout series, Bethesda announces the next-gen upgrade for Fallout 4 – which was released back in 2015.
- With the update, you can play Fallout 4 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S at about 60 FPS.
- The next-gen upgrade will be available on April 23 as a free update for everyone. Even PC players will benefit.
This is included in the update: Players of Fallout 4 on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S will receive native 60 FPS settings, along with options for a quality or performance mode, increased stability, and some fixes.
PC players will receive support for widescreen and ultra-widescreen. All platforms will also get fixes and updates for various content such as quests.
Along with the update, a new quest will be introduced to the game, which will bring the Enclave into Fallout 4. New items will also appear in the Creation Club:
- Enclave weapon and armor skins
- the Tesla Cannon
- the Heavy-Weight Power Furnace
- the Hellfire and X-02 Power Armor
The update is free for all owners of Fallout 4.

Players doubted whether the upgrade would even come
Just a few hours before the announcement, a user on Reddit asked about the status of the upgrade and received the cynical response: “Not happening.” Actually, the next-gen upgrade was already planned for 2023.
In December, however, the official statement was made that the upgrade would not be expected until 2024 (via Twitter). At that time, people mainly blamed the release of Starfield for this.
Although Fallout 4 is almost 9 years old, the game still has over 25,000 players on Steam alone (via steamcharts) – more than the newest installment, Fallout 76. Additionally, there are users on other platforms, as well as through GOG and, with the update, also on the Epic Games Store.
The community still seems very attached to the post-apocalyptic title that introduced a real building system to the series. It is well known that mods also play a significant role – they are often the reason why Bethesda games last much longer than planned. However, the Fallout series also has its own charm and is among the best post-apocalyptic games you can play right now.
