An employee of Facebook is living his dream by working from a cruise ship and traveling the world. MeinMMO reveals what it’s all about.
More and more companies are allowing their employees to work from home, but for an employee at Meta, that’s not enough. Austin Wells, a 28-year-old from San Diego, decided to take his home office work model to the next level.
He invested nearly 300,000 euros in a 12-year lease for an apartment on a cruise ship to explore the world while continuing to work for one of the largest companies in the world.
Flexible working at sea
What is his plan? The employee in the Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality department at Meta has an unconventional idea: He plans to live on a cruise ship for at least three years to travel the world while continuing to work. This idea allows him to save more money than with a conventional accommodation.
Thanks to his flexible working hours, he can shape his workday to work in the evenings, at night, and in the early mornings. This way, he can visit cities during the day and start his work around 6 or 7 PM. Another advantage of this flexibility is that he can invite friends and family on board for a month during this time.

What kind of cruise ship is it? It is a huge luxury cruise ship called MV Narrative. The cruise ship offers 20 restaurants and bars, a cinema, pools, a gym, a spa area, and a 24-hour room service. Moreover, the ship is also supposed to have a theater for performances.
Health is also taken care of, as the cruise ship has its own ship doctor. The ship consists of more than 500 private rooms and apartments – for around 1,000 passengers.
The cruise ship is expected to set sail from Croatia in 2025 and will call at Rome, Venice, Slovenia, Albania, and Greece, among others.
