Cheater, Modder, Hacker – in the PC version of the action game GTA Online, such nasty characters are commonplace. However, the issue has now reached a new level, and there are even warnings not to enter the game at all right now. MeinMMO shares the details.
GTA 5 is a phenomenon, an anomaly in the gaming market. For years, the action game sold brilliantly, and although the game and the online mode are about to turn 10 years old, there was a peak of 180,000 simultaneous players in the last 30 days – just on Steam (via steamcharts.com).
This is absolutely impressive. Especially considering that on PC, there have always been major problems with cheaters or modders that affect the online experience.
However, a point has now been reached where the problem is clearly getting out of hand. GTA expert Tez has issued a warning on Twitter and recommends that all PC players start GTA Online only with appropriate protection. Or preferably not at all.
Update: Have you already been caught by the hack and can’t log in online anymore? Use this solution.
The console version remains unaffected by the current problems. Here, you can continue to safely play the latest update ‘Drug Wars’:
“Avoid playing without firewall rules or at all”
What is the problem? Cheaters can now alter your account data. They don’t even have to be in your lobby. They can change your rank, your account balance, your cars, and equipment. Even a ban or complete deletion is possible.
In short: They have access to everything. You can find Tez’s warning on Twitter here:
Tez is regarded in the community as one of the greatest experts on GTA Online. He has also studied a lot about the technology behind it. His word carries weight, and he doesn’t issue such a warning lightly.
The expert writes that the current capabilities of modders could even damage your PC.
If you still want to play GTA Online on PC, you should set up a “firewall rule”. This way, you can create solo sessions and even invite friends. However, the setup is quite complicated, and mistakes can lead to an unprotected PC.
An English guide for setting up a firewall rule can also be found on Twitter. Tez recommends the following approach:
However, be really careful with this, and if you feel that the setup might be too difficult for you, then you should rather stay away from GTA Online for the time being.
The latest reports paint a grim picture of the current state of the PC version. In fact, the problems didn’t come as a complete surprise. In October 2022, data miners reported the discovery that GTA Online had disabled 95% of its anti-cheat system.
Players may now be feeling the consequences of the decision, which was already deemed “curious” at that time. Tez is currently tweeting that the developers are likely working hard on a solution. Developer Rockstar has not yet commented on this through official channels.
