Philip von Pud’s Small Batch Headphones manufactures special headphones. Its latest model “Ol’ Thumpy” looks strange, but offers very good sound.
The developer Philip produces special headphones under the company name “Pud’s Small Batch Headphones.” His latest model is the “Ol’ Thumpy.” As you may have noticed from the title image, the headphones feature gigantic spheres that protrude from the headphones. But there is actually a reason for this.

Helmholtz resonators provide significantly better bass sound
Why are the headphones so huge? The headphones from “Pud’s Small Batch Headphones” utilize so-called Helmholtz resonators. The developer compares it to a cola bottle that you blow into to produce a specific tone.
He explains that his headphones use Helmholtz resonators tuned to 60 Hz. This gives you a very deep, natural fundamental tone. You won’t find such deep and authentic bass with any headphones or headsets available for purchase.
Why is bass so important in headphones? Bass is responsible for the low frequencies in headphones. But it has another significance.
- Bass also gives music depth and volume. Without enough bass, music often sounds flat and lifeless: deep-tuned bass guitars, earthquakes, detonations, or other low sounds reside in the bass frequencies. Without deep bass, everything sounds a bit flat because the frequency occurs almost everywhere.
- In the bass frequencies is also the fundamental frequency of the male voice, which strongly influences the faithful reproduction of male vocals. If you listen to a lot of music, watch movies, or play games, this plays an important role.
And the Helmholtz resonators in the headphones provide a particularly strong and natural bass. Try it out for yourself by blowing into a bottle.
The developer manufactures 20 to 50 devices per model
Can you buy these headphones? In fact, you can buy these headphones, as they are not just prototypes or experimental models. In a conversation with PCGamer, Philip explained that he takes about a week to manufacture each headset. Overall, he makes about 20 to 50 pieces per model, so not large quantities.
You won’t find prices on the official website of “Pud’s Small Batch Headphones” yet, but the prices are likely to be high since they are very special, handmade products.
