Alleria Windrunner could herald the downfall of Azeroth. A new theory reveals why and how she might summon the feared “Void Lords” in WoW.
With World of Warcraft: Legion, Blizzard has inserted a wealth of hints and teasers into the game that might reveal a possible future for the story. For months, forums have been filled with theories surrounding the Void Lords, the fate of Azeroth, and the various whispers from Il’gynoth in the Emerald Dream.
On Reddit, user wefwegfweg has crafted a new theory that connects existing hints well and makes a lot of sense. According to this, Alleria will die, granting the Void Lords access to Azeroth.
The theory mainly refers to the following sentence from Il’gynoth:
“At the hour of her third death, she promises our coming.”
Many theories assumed that “she” either refers to Azeroth, Sylvanas, or even Jaina. However, according to wefwegfweg, these three are ruled out, because:
According to the Blade Xal’atath, Azeroth has already died three times: during the Cataclysm, at the separation of the continents, and during the “Shattering” (which presumably refers to the tearing out of Y’Shaarj).
Sylvanas has already died three times: by Arthas, her suicide in Icecrown, and by Godfrey at the Wall to Gilneas.
Jaina has never truly “died”, and both Stratholme and Theramore do not seem convincing enough.
Alleria Windrunner faces her third death
However, Alleria Windrunner seems much more likely, as she has become a creature of the Void since the events on Argus.
Alleria herself fuels this theory, as she states: “Sometimes it feels like I’ve already died twice. Once, when we were lost on Draenor, and another time when the shadow of the fallen Naaru seized me.”
This makes Alleria a clear candidate for a “third death”.
But how should Alleria’s death trigger the summoning of the Void Lords? Again, one of Xal’atath’s quotes comes into play.
“The walls between worlds are thin and fragile here. Do you know what will happen when true light and shadow meet here?”
Indeed, we already know what happens when light meets void. This can be seen in the recruitment quest of the Nightborne. There, Alleria (Void) approaches the Sunwell (Light). There are several explosions and numerous portals open, summoning creatures of the void.
At the Sunwell, light meets shadow – and chaos ensues.
The theory now suggests that Alleria will die in Battle for Azeroth. Her beloved, Turalyon, will not accept her death and attempt to resurrect her with the power of Light. This will be a direct confrontation of “light versus shadow” (or void), causing a particularly large portal to open – perhaps even large enough for a Void Lord to cross into the world?
Whether there is any truth to this theory, we will likely only see over the course of Battle for Azeroth, as this expansion nears its end. Until then, speculating is fun and continues to occupy the community.
What do you think of this theory? Do you think Turalyon and Alleria will play such a big role?
