Actually, Greg Street was supposed to develop the new MMORPG in the world of League of Legends . However, in March 2023 he left Riot Games. The LoL MMORPG has now had a restart. Greg Street wishes the team good luck and explains why he is no longer involved.
This is the situation:
- In December 2020, Riot Games announced that they were developing a new MMORPG in the world of Runeterra. The leading mind for the game was supposed to be Greg “Ghostcrawler” Street, who was at the helm during the golden age of World of Warcraft for Blizzard.
- However, Ghostcrawler left Riot Games in March 2023 to start his own studio and develop his own MMORPG.
- The head of Riot Games, Marc Merrill, announced on March 20 that they would conduct a restart for the LoL MMORPG and would go “dark” for a few years, meaning they would not talk about the MMORPG while developing it. Greg Street now comments on this.
Greg Street introduced his own MMO Ghost
:
This is what the former head says: On March 20, Greg Street commented on Twitter. He wished the Riot MMO all the best and said: they have a great world and a truly top-notch game. He will definitely play it a lot.
“Two of the reasons I started my own studio: 1) I didn’t want to spend 10 years developing a game. 2) I wanted to develop a game openly and take the players on the journey.”
LoL MMORPG goes dark
– Ghostcrawler stays bright
What does he want to do differently? Ghostcrawler hints at how important it is to him that his new MMORPG “Ghost” does not go dark, but stays in the light and develops together with the players.
This also has drawbacks, as a game often does not look good in the early stages of development, as he noted earlier. But an open development corresponds more to the strengths of his studio. No strategy is right or wrong here.
He also knows that too much information during development can tire players. Some just want to hear when the game is done and do not want to hear about every obstacle in development.
What does he say about the length of the project? Street doesn’t seem to be a fan of long production times. He says there is also a significant risk involved. You don’t want to develop a game for the PS4 when the PS6 is just coming out by the time you finally publish it.
Modern engines would significantly accelerate development. But if you expect high-resolution content, that could slow things down again.
His new MMORPG is supposed to come out faster than others
How long does he want to take for his own MMO? He does not give an exact timeframe, but he says: “We will bring it out faster than most big developers.”
He does not understand why the development of a game should take 7 years or longer, unless there are technical issues or poor management. And in his opinion, management is often the problem.
This is what lies behind it: It was not quite clear why Ghostcrawler left Riot Games. Now it is clearer:
- He does not want to develop
in the dark
without involving the fans - He probably wants a faster schedule than Riot Games desires
- Apparently, a third reason was that he wanted to return to his home because he lost family members during the Covid pandemic – a generous
home office
regulation was probably a problem for Riot
However, Ghostcrawler already mentioned this on March 16 – on March 17, his former boss announced the delay of the LoL MMORPG.
