Evolve, the 4vs1 shooter from Turtle Rock, is being transitioned to Free2Play today. Find out the details here.
Update: Evolve is going f2p!It has now been confirmed by the developers. Evolve is going Free2Play and is starting today, starting on July 7, 2016, with an open beta on PC. Later, Evolve will also go Free2Play on consoles, but first, they want to ensure the transition on PC goes smoothly.
If you bought the game back then, you don’t have to worry: The developers have promised that they will always consider fans who have been there from the beginning and paid for the game in their plans. According to the developers:
“As long as we work on Evolve, we will show our gratitude to all original buyers of the game for supporting Evolve so early. This will happen in the form of gifts, rewards, and special access.”
We hopefully will learn more about this once the countdown is over.
Original announcement:
Evolve – The End or a New Beginning?
What has become of Evolve? Not much. After the rapid decline in player numbers and the second wave of DLC characters, things have been quiet around the 4vs1 shooter. For almost half a year, the developers have been working on a large update that is supposedly set to be released this summer, but we haven’t heard much about it since then.
But now Evolve seems to be making a comeback – at least it appears that way. Because since yesterday, Evolve can no longer be purchased on Steam. Is the game being completely discontinued? That seems unlikely, as a countdown was simultaneously published on the official website of the game, set to end today at 6:00 PM. Together with the hashtag “StageUp,” this suggests that Evolve will evolve in some way.
The most likely scenario is that Evolve will become a Free2Play title, funded through the sale of skins, characters, and other cosmetics.
This theory is supported by the fact that Evolve was not discounted during the recent “Summer Sale” and therefore was not advertised. If the shift to a Free2Play model is confirmed, at least it points to a decent move by the developers, who do not want to “squeeze money from customers” before the game goes free.
We will probably not have absolute certainty until around 6 PM when the creators of Evolve reveal what will become of the game. Personally, I hope the game experiences its “second spring” and more players get to enjoy Evolve, as for me, the monster hunt remains one of the best games I have ever had the pleasure to play. Even if not many will be interested: I am eagerly awaiting 6 PM and hoping for the best.
