Another gaming victim in 2023. Evil Dead: The Game ceases development after just over a year.
Evil Dead: The Game was supposed to be a true competitor to Dead by Daylight. Horror-splatter action mixed with co-op gameplay, along with the well-known characters from the “Evil Dead” franchise. After just over a year, this dream has finally burst. Further development of the game has been halted – and the already announced Switch version will not be released at all.
What is going on with Evil Dead: The Game? In May 2022, Evil Dead: The Game was released and aimed to impress with suspense, action, and cooperative gameplay. However, the good mood lasted only a short time. While there were some smaller expansions with new content: a castle map inspired by the film “Army of Darkness” as well as the “Splatter Royale” mode. But gradually, the flow of content dried up. Now came the news on X (formerly Twitter):
We have made the decision to no longer pursue the development of new content for Evil Dead: The Game.
This was accompanied by the announcement that the once-planned Switch version of the game will no longer be released.
How has the game fared lately? Extremely poorly – at least when looking at the data on Steam. According to Steamcharts, Evil Dead: The Game had a peak of 43 concurrent players in the last 30 days.
Evil Dead was also available on Xbox and PlayStation – but here the player numbers are not known.
However, it must also be noted that the game was only released on Steam with significant delay and was mostly available on PC solely in the Epic Games Store. When it finally launched on Steam in 2023, all the hype had long since faded.
Can you still play? Yes. The servers will remain online for the foreseeable future, and if there are any “major issues,” the developers plan to address them.
However, how long this “foreseeable future” lasts can also be questioned. Those who want to play Evil Dead: The Game should do so thoroughly in the coming months before the plugs are eventually pulled completely.
What’s behind this? The news comes shortly after the announcement that the Embracer Group is facing financial difficulties. Major restructuring is currently taking place, leading to many layoffs and total job cuts. This affected, among others, the developer of the “Saints Row” series, Volition Games.
