After the release of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, numerous players are diving into the battle royale mode. To help you progress faster towards max level, we have summarized everything you need to know about leveling up in Blackout.
The Blackout mode of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 has a similar progression system to the traditional multiplayer, but there are also some important differences. Here are the aspects to consider when leveling up in Blackout.
The Max Level of Blackout – but without Prestige
What is the max level in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Blackout? The max level in the in-house battle royale mode is 80. The leveling phase is divided into 5 ranks, known as Echelons. Once you have reached the max level, it cannot be reset – at least not at launch.
How do I earn experience? You need to earn Merits to level up. Merits are the equivalent of EXP. You earn points for things like killing enemies, good placements in the Blackout mode, or challenges.
Is there Prestige in Black Ops 4, as known from previous CoD titles? No, unlike the traditional multiplayer, there is no Prestige in Blackout. Whether the Prestige mode will possibly be added for Blackout at a later date is currently unknown.
What is the Prestige mode? The Prestige mode is an additional challenge in the progression system of many Call of Duty titles. After reaching the max level, you can switch to Prestige.
This resets you back to Level 1. However, you receive new Prestige challenges and can earn certain exclusive items that you can only obtain through Prestige – such as Prestige calling cards or Prestige symbols. In contrast to the Prestige mode, at least the Prestige Emblems are part of Black Ops 4.
What about the Hardcore mode? The well-known Hardcore mode from the last title, where a single hit could mean death, will not be present in Blackout according to Treyarch (David Vonderhaar). However, it has not been ruled out for other multiplayer modes in Black Ops 4.
How do you level up in Call of Duty Blackout?
The leveling or progression system in the Blackout mode differs in some aspects from the regular multiplayer. It can sometimes feel frustrating as you may not feel rewarded to the same extent as you do in the regular multiplayer. Here are some things to keep in mind:
What are Merits in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Blackout? For killing enemies, completing certain challenges, and achieving good placements or even victories, you earn points in Blackout. These points are called Merits.
Upon reaching a certain Merit score, you level up. Essentially, it is a Blackout-specific term for XP – experience points.
What are the Echelons in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Blackout? The ranks or levels of your character are referred to as Echelons in Black Ops 4. By collecting Merit points, you advance through the Echelons – up to the max level of 80.
What are the Tiers in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Blackout?
The Echelons – that is, the ranks – in the Blackout mode of Black Ops 4 are divided into five different Tiers. In each Tier, you are assigned a different title. This way, you can better assess whether an opponent is an experienced player or more of a beginner. The following Tiers exist in Blackout:
- Ranger (Echelon 1-19)
- Frogman (Echelon 20-39)
- Airborne (Echelon 41-60)
- Seal (Echelon 61-79)
- Battle Hardened (Echelon 80).
What are the Challenges in the Blackout mode?
The Blackout challenges are specific challenges that earn you additional Merit points upon successful completion.
The challenges are divided into two main categories, each of which splits into two subcategories:
- Career Challenges: include Professional Challenges and Survivalist Challenges
- Operations Challenges: include Heroics and Vehicular
Most of these challenges consist of three stages, which secure you additional Merit points upon completion. In addition, there are Dark Ops challenges, which are secret and will only be revealed once you have mastered them.

Career – Professional Challenges:
- My First Time: Earn your first victory
- Winner Winner: Win 10x
- I’ll Do It Myself: Win 5x any duos or quads match as the last surviving player of your team
- Solo Victory: Achieve 5 victories in this mode
- Duos Victory: Achieve 5 victories in this mode
- Quads Victory: Achieve 5 victories in this mode
- Solo Conquest: Complete this mode 10x in the top 5
- Duos Conquest: Complete this mode 10x in the top 5
- Quads Conquest: Complete this mode 10x in the top 5
- My Participation Award: Achieve a top 25 placement 10x
- Unthinking Act of Murder: Eliminate 10 enemies
- Career Scavenger: Collect 1,500 items
- Professional Mastery: Complete all Professional Challenges 100%.
Career – Survivalist Challenges:
- Team Player: Revive a team member 25x
- Heal Up: Use 100x any healing item on yourself
- Armored Up: Collect and equip body armor 50x
- Backpacker: Collect 50 backpacks
- Got The Drop: Eliminate 25 enemies without taking damage from them
- Amphibious Assault: Eliminate 5x an enemy while you are underwater
- Getaway Vehicle: Escape 10x from a fight with a vehicle
- Perks? Really?: Complete 25 matches in the top 10 with an active perk
- Equip It and Mint It: Eliminate 25x enemies with equipment
- True Sniper: Eliminate 5x an enemy from a distance with a sniper
- Roster Update: Complete 5 unlock missions
- One Step Ahead: Finish 25 matches in the top 10 without taking damage from the collapsing circle
- Survivalist Mastery: Complete all Survivalist Challenges 100%.
Operations – Heroics:
- Destroyer of Vehicles: Destroy 10 manned vehicles
- Revenge is a Dish: Defeat 10x enemies who have forced you into Last Stand
- Best Served Cold: Eliminate an enemy who has killed your teammate in 5 different matches and finish the match in the top 5
- This Is Just Cruel: Complete 5x a match without being forced to kneel (severely injured, must be revived by a teammate)
- Pack Hunter: Eliminate 5x two or more opponents from the same squad
- Nope: Eliminate 10x an enemy who has injured you
- Keen Focus: Eliminate 5 enemies while blinded or stunned
- Frantic Defense: Take unarmed damage and kill the attacker 5x
- Get Straight To It: Eliminate 5x two or more enemies in the first 30 seconds after jumping
- Clutch: Eliminate an entire enemy squad in a quads match solo
- Masochist: Use only the first item you collected and finish in the top 5
- Heroics Mastery: Complete all Heroic Challenges 100%.
Operations – Vehicular:
- Destruction Derby: Destroy a manned vehicle with a vehicle
- Just In Time: Escape 10x from a vehicle that has a rocket locked on
- Silent Gliding: Travel 10 miles in a wingsuit
- Road Trippin’: Travel 10 miles in a land vehicle
- Water Rat: Travel 10 miles in a water vehicle
- I Believe I Can Fly: Travel 50 miles in an aircraft
- Saw It In The Movies: Eliminate 10 opponents as a passenger in any vehicle
- Top Tour: Drive or fly with all vehicle types in one match – 5x
- Road Rage: Run over 5x an enemy with a land vehicle
- Hijacker: Kill one or more opponents who are passengers in a land vehicle – 5x
- Pirate: Kill one or more opponents who are passengers in a water vehicle – 5x
- Scoundrel: Kill one or more opponents who are passengers in an aircraft – 5x
- Vehicular Mastery: Complete all Vehicular Challenges 100%.
How do you get Prestige Emblems and what are they?
To unlock a Prestige emblem in Call of Duty Black Ops 4, you must level up your profile in traditional multiplayer to level 55. Once this is done, you will receive the first Prestige 1 emblem. To unlock further Prestige symbols, you need to participate in regular multiplayer matches and earn experience there.
