22:21: Ghostwire: Tokyo receives a substantial story trailer that introduces us to the protagonist and antagonist of the game, along with a multitude of scary monsters that you will encounter.
The action-adventure game is played from a first-person perspective. You have various psychic abilities at your disposal to fend off the ghosts from Japanese folklore. Director Shunichiro Hara describes the combat system as “Karate meets magic.”
22:20: GTA V is now being released on its third PlayStation generation.
22:18: The remaster of Alan Wake is coming to the PS5. The popular game from Remedy revolves around the writer Alan Wake, whose wife disappears during their vacation. Alan must uncover the secrets of the small town and fight against the dark forces that dwell there.
22:16: The next trailer is for Rainbow Six: Extraction. New gameplay of the operators, their special abilities, teams of 3 players, and bosses are shown. Additionally, the unique mechanic of “extraction” is introduced – if an operator is lost, they must be rescued before they can be deployed again.
22:13: Next, a new trailer for Square Enix’s Project Athia / Forspoken is shown. We learn how the protagonist of the game ends up in another world, where she must survive. She is “accompanied” by a magical talking bracelet that grants her magical powers.
The antagonist of the game also makes her first appearance. The release is slated for Spring 2022.
22:10: Borderlands 3 makes an appearance. The spin-off Tiny Tina’s Wonderland gets a new trailer. The trailer is accompanied by music from the Japanese band Babymetal. The release date of the game is March 25, 2022.

22:07: Following that, another trailer for a Korean action game called Project Eve is shown, in which you control a young woman fighting against monsters.
22:05: A trailer for the remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic follows. The original game is one of the most beloved Star Wars games ever and is now getting a complete remake. The game is being rebuilt from the ground up while retaining the legendary story of the game.
The development team at Aspyr is taking on the task of the remake together with Lucas Games.

21:03: Journalist Jason Schreier mentioned in a tweet that the stream will bring “surprises, superheroes, and the reveal of a game” that people have been asking him about for years.

Which games will be shown?
Sony has not yet confirmed any specific game that will definitely be present at the showcase. The intention, however, is to show new PS5 games from small and large developer studios that are expected to be released by the end of 2021 and likely in 2022.
Major games expected to be released on PS5 by the end of 2021 include:
- Kena: Bridge of Spirits (September 21)
- FIFA 22 (October 1)
- Far Cry 6 (October 7)
- Battlefield 2042 (October 22)
- CoD Vanguard (November 5)
- GTA V (November 11)
Speculation: As is the case with every such event, there are plenty of rumors, speculations, and hopes about what will be shown. The following games are currently considered top candidates for the showcase:
- God of War: Ragnarok – After the sequel to the action blockbuster from Sony Santa Monica was pushed to 2022, fans are now hoping for a proper reveal with gameplay and maybe even a release date.
- Horizon 2 Forbidden West – Now that we know the release date of the game, the showcase would be a good opportunity to show more gameplay.
- Final Fantasy XVI – There hasn’t been information about the next main installment of the popular J-RPG series in a long time. Director Naoki Yoshida also announced that the game will likely not be shown at the Tokyo Game Show. Is it because it’s already part of the Sony showcase?
- A new Infamous game – Rumors suggest the series will either get a reboot or a new game that will be revealed at the PS5 event.
- A AAA game from Marvel – Another rumor suggests that a new large game set in the Marvel universe, focusing on single-player, will be revealed at the showcase. However, this is a very thin rumor that should be taken with caution.
- A game from FromSoftware – The popular development studio is reportedly working on a PS5 game for a long time. There’s a rumor that fans of Bloodborne are hoping for a second part.
With a showcase that is “only” 40 minutes long, it is rather unlikely that all these big games will be presented during the show, if they are shown at all. Therefore, it’s best to keep your expectations a bit lower to avoid disappointment at the end.
