The Elder Scrolls Online is getting new loot boxes today, and they contain some of the coolest mounts ever seen in the MMORPG. Unfortunately, hardly anyone will be able to claim the best of these mounts as their own. Our author Jürgen Horn regrets this as well.
What are the loot boxes in ESO? ESO regularly offers a new edition of the so-called “Crown Crates” in the Crown Store. This is the ESO name for the good old loot boxes, a kind of mystery bag that you purchase with real money, containing randomly selected items. These include consumables, costumes, emotes, pets, and mounts.
The latter are always particularly in demand, as they are lovingly designed and each represent a unique theme.
What’s inside the new loot boxes? The new boxes come from the “Nightfall” series and will be available on June 18, 2020, at 4:00 PM. As always, the items are divided into rarity grades, and at the highest level, the “Radiant Apex Rewards”, there are three particularly cool mounts.
New mounts launch an all-out assault on the wallet
How can you get the new mounts? I, Jürgen Horn from the ESO team at MeinMMO, love mounts and pets in ESO and would at least like to have the Senche-Rath monster! But like many other players from the ESO community, I will probably end up empty-handed because the chances of pulling such a Radiant-Apex loot piece from a chest are usually less than one percent!
So it has been with the previous loot boxes that one could only free such a rare mount from the box in about 0.27% of all cases (via crowncrates.com). Most likely, this will not change much with the new Nightfall crates.
Anyone wanting a very special beast had to settle for chances around 0.10%. Unlike the other box contents, the Radiant-Apex mounts can ONLY be obtained through pulls, not through the bonus gems you receive when you pull duplicates in loot boxes or sell existing rewards.

How many boxes do I need to get the mount: Accordingly, you would need to buy about 370 loot boxes to obtain a Radiant-Apex drop. And the boxes cost about 3.50 euros each …
I have to accept that I will never ride through the vampiric wastelands of Skyrim on a bloodthirsty giant cat monster mount.
This is what the players say: Many players in the ESO forum are therefore also quite disappointed:
- Pyvos: “This cursed Senche-Rath-Darkfang mount looks absolutely amazing. But I still won’t be persuaded to buy Crown Crates.”
- Turelus: “I’ll give you my 1800 gems for the lichsteed… plz? Well, I won’t waste money on it, but I’ll take a shot and hope that the impossible RNG gives me a favor.”
- Thedavidventer: “The new items look fantastic. I love the Senche mount! Great job from the art department. Do I want one? Yes. Do I want one so much that I’m willing to gamble for the chance to maybe get one only to end up with something completely different? No. I’ll pass.”
What are the alternatives? Luckily, the new box edition still offers rewards that you can get with a bit of luck from the box, and, if necessary, through direct purchase with gems. At least the second highest category of the “Apex Rewards” can be unlocked this way, as well as “The Smallest Violin in the World” as an emote. You can find more cool rewards from the new loot boxes here in the gallery.
Jürgen’s conclusion: I try my luck, but don’t overdo it
The release of a new collection of loot box items makes me both happy and sad at the same time. I admire the wonderful mounts and feel regret that I can only get them with a lot of luck or money.
Nevertheless, I end up investing a few euros in a handful of boxes and am happy if once in a while there is an Apex mount in there, which has happened to me at least once. Most of the time I get enough gems from duplicate items to at least get the coolest emotes and items directly.
This time, that will definitely be the violin emote and “Bite Me” to tease vampires. I still find the bloodsuckers incredibly annoying! And maybe I will get lucky and snag the super rare Senche-Rath riding cat.
