I believe that the magic of Classic in our minds came from the great community back then. The WoW of that time is not better than Retail in my opinion… but the people who played it were.

However, there were also some negative comments. With 18% (683 votes), almost one in five players finds WoW Classic terrible and believes it has tarnished the memory of Classic. From their perspective, the release was a mistake. For example, Jan Mantel wrote:
WoW Classic was our biggest disappointment. We, a group of 4 guys and one girl, all working, planned to play WoW Classic together. (…)
We were never online together as a group. Constant queues when we got home around 6:30 PM and wanted to log in. We put up with that for 2 months. (…)
Since then, the frustration is still there, and we never gave the game another chance.
Our reader Jue also sees the patch state rather critically:
Patch 1.12 was a mistake, the patches like in the original would have been the right approach. And if that is not possible, then just leave it or use private server clients. If they also take the last content patch in TBC, it will be just as much a stroll and I will skip it. Every patch was mostly a nerf of the old content. Additionally, players know the mechanics… 1.12 was a mistake and TBC will be just as bad…
What’s next? Currently, the release of “The Burning Crusade Classic” is being discussed. However, there have been no official announcements yet. Players can probably expect this no earlier than February 2021, as the BlizzConline will take place then and bring many new insights.

Classic was certainly not a mistake. It showed that there is a demand for a specific type of MMORPG. One that runs a bit slower. One that offers room for exploration.
Of course, it’s not perfect. The patch state of 1.12 was unfortunate (although necessary since there was simply no other backup from back then) and I hope that with Burning Crusade Classic we don’t run into the same issue.

Classic was a nice balance at the end of BfA. I really enjoyed the leveling phase, and even the “old” dungeons were interesting again.
