Any player who has ever played an MMO or RPG is surely familiar with class systems. There is usually a Warrior, a Mage, a Rogue or Assassin, a Hunter, and so on. Each of these archetypes represents a specific play style, has specific weapons, and usually also a specific role. Forget all that! EverQuest Next is taking a different approach.
Classes are built from keywords, officially called “Keywords.” There are two different types of these keywords: Origin and Damage Type. Origins are the foundations of abilities. They determine how an ability ultimately looks and also serve as an energy source.
The damage types, on the other hand, indicate what kind of mechanics are behind the abilities. Abilities with the fire damage type, for example, have a damage-over-time effect, while the shadow damage type is more characterized by life steal.
