Starting this summer, players of the space MMO EVE Online will participate in discovering exoplanets in space.
As announced earlier this year, a partnership has been established between CCP Games, Massively Multiplayer Online Science (MMOS), the University of Reykjavik, and the University of Geneva, which aims to have EVE Online players help find exoplanets in the universe. At the EVE Fanfest, which took place last weekend in Reykjavik, new information about this project was revealed.
The Universe! Infinite Vastness …
EVE players receive images taken by the Kepler telescope and are expected to look for anomalies that may indicate the presence of an exoplanet. An exoplanet is a planet that orbits a star outside our solar system. As a reward for this work, players will receive in-game currency and other rewards for EVE Online.
EVE players searching for new planets
To recognize exoplanets in the images, players are provided with a lot of data about the brightness of various stars. If this brightness is lower and appears “blocked,” it could be an indication that a planet is orbiting the star. Players will mark such an anomaly and add a small note about what they believe to have seen. This will then be transferred to a database where other players can confirm the anomaly. Once a certain number of confirmations is reached, the discovery will be sent to the University of Geneva for verification.
Perhaps this way, some new planets in space will be discovered.
