EVE Online is referred to by some as “Excel in space.” With an update, this is even true, as the 3D graphics can now be completely removed.
What does this update bring? It is now possible to turn off the 3D component of the game. This means you will only see the text and the user interface. Where the game usually takes place and you see the spaceships flying in space, there is now a black area.
What exactly does it bring? EVE Online particularly struggles with severe performance issues during large battles like in the current World War Bee 2. To ensure the game remains playable in extreme situations, there is something called “time dilation.” Firing weapons or the movements of ships occur at a slower pace to ensure that the server does not crash under the load. The fights, therefore, essentially unfold in slow motion.
However, this does not always help. There are battles involving thousands of players that are so massive that essentially only a slideshow is visible. The number of ships and explosions naturally affects not only the servers of EVE Online but also the players’ PCs. Additionally, new records with even more ships are always being attempted. This is where the new “tables in space” mode comes into play.
As there are no 3D graphics visible, one does not have to worry about the performance of the game anymore.
A game without graphics
How does it work? If you notice that EVE Online’s performance is tanking – perhaps during a large fight – you simply turn off the 3D graphics. The screen will mostly be black, and you will operate solely through the UI and the text. This way, the space MMO can be played smoothly again.
Essentially, the text and UI provide you with everything you need to know. The 3D graphics are only for visualization. They are not truly necessary. Hence, EVE Online has the reputation of being “Excel in space.”
Who uses this? The new mode is especially intended for those who play more than one account in EVE Online via multiboxing and run multiple game clients on one PC.
How do the developers explain the mode? EVE’s Brand Director, CCP Goodfella, writes about the UI-Only mode:
As the war in EVE has reached a turning point, now is a good time to add the ultimate performance boost option – a feature often requested by our hardcore players. Of course, this option is only intended for the most extreme situations. But as we all know, EVE is all about extreme situations, and with the war raging, every frame counts. We look forward to being surprised by the creative ways this feature will be utilized by our community!
