The creators of EVE Online and BBC Studios have announced a collaboration. The sci-fi MMO will soon be visited by one of the most famous and best series on the planet: Doctor Who.
If you have to ask what kind of series Doctor Who is, please go immediately to your basement and watch all the seasons in one go. Or at least the new ones from 2005 to today, which are somewhat easier to digest.
Seriously, Doctor Who is the best series of all time and has even entered the Guinness World Records as the longest-running series. For me, it represents a piece of youth and nostalgia. Every minute of the show is worth it! Or… well, you are reading the summary below.
Now the well-known space MMO EVE Online is starting a crossover with Doctor Who and bringing another opportunity to explore the already huge universe with an area specially designed for the event. The event runs from January 13 to February 1, 2022.
Daleks and Time Lord Artifacts in EVE Online
In the “Interstellar Convergence”, you should uncover mysteries by following clues and completing tasks. There are new corners of the universe to explore and thematic items to collect.
For this, you will receive rewards that you can take back to New Eden, into the world of EVE Online. A login campaign will give you skill points and Doctor Who-styled items. However, at the center of the event is a great war.
With special artifacts, you prepare for the fight against the Doctor’s and the Time Lords’ greatest enemies: the Daleks!
What are Daleks?
Members of this warrior race may look like upside-down garbage bins with coffee cup lids, toilet plungers, and curling irons in their armor, but they are responsible for the extermination of countless beings.
Inside the almost indestructible tanks are genetically modified mutants that have essentially been bred to exterminate all non-Daleks. And you now have to ensure that they do not do exactly that. A flying saucer of theirs was already seen in the trailer. It looks quirky, but it’s very dangerous.
To give you a bit of a feel for what the Daleks and Doctor Who are about, here’s a little history lesson:
A Piece of Childhood and Youth in EVE Online
Doctor Who first aired in 1963 on the British channel BBC and follows the adventures of the Doctor. Yes, just the Doctor, not Doctor Who. This human-like alien can travel through time and space – with his faithful spaceship, the Tardis.
He visits various places and times, meets friends and enemies, and simply has adventures.
The franchise includes over 39 seasons of the series, several films, books, and more. Doctor Who is considered the longest-running series of all time. There are even museum exhibitions dedicated to Doctor Who and video games.
For me, Doctor Who means that a good part of my past has found its way into EVE Online. Although I only started with the revamped series from 2005, I have devoured everything about the Doctor that I could find afterward. Back then, I was 12 or 13 years old.
The series captivated me for years, and (almost) every year in December there was a Christmas special for the current season. My highlight of the year for the past 16 years. It’s almost impossible to summarize the story “briefly”. It would fill books, and it already has. But I will still give you a few bullet points:
- The Doctor is a “Time Lord” who can travel through time with his spaceship (the TARDIS).
- The sonic screwdriver is the Doctor’s universal tool and more useful than any weapon you can imagine. It can … almost do anything.
- His Tardis always looks like a British police box from the 1920s. And it is bigger inside than it is outside. Why, I don’t want to spoil.
- The Doctor takes companions with him to not forget how to make moral decisions. He is ancient, and one tends to forget such things.
- The entire story revolves around a huge, technically endless war between Time Lords and Daleks and explains why the Doctor always travels around. By the way, the event takes place before this war.
The series explores the concept of time and space and connects them with adventures. For any fan of science fiction, it’s an absolute must, even if it’s just for the crazy space music in the intro:
Is it worth a look? In Doctor Who? Definitely! In EVE Online? Absolutely! Will I do it? Probably not. EVE Online is incredibly complex, and unfortunately, I lack the time to give the game the attention it deserves.
But anyone looking for a new game to play should definitely check out the event. And even if it’s just to finally take the plunge into Doctor Who or EVE. Getting into the MMO has actually become easier now:
