The transition to a Free2Play model has been eagerly anticipated by the developers of the MMORPG EVE Online and by the players as well.
Especially the EVE community weighs every little change in the game very carefully. In an interview, CCP Games’ Andie Nordgren discusses, among other things, how the community has reacted to the update. She also explains what changes the Ascension update brings.
Free2Play opens up the EVE Online universe
According to Andie Nordgren, every player who plays Free2Play, and thus with an Alpha clone, can enjoy a complete EVE experience. While there are restrictions in terms of skills and the ships that one can fly, everyone can still do everything that others do. There are no restrictions on activities or exploration of the universe. One can engage with anyone if desired and could even have a chance against capital ships under certain circumstances.
Anyone who once had a subscription and now wants to try the game for free can continue playing their character, but with the restrictions of an Alpha clone. Many of the learned skills will be grayed out and unusable until the subscription is reactivated. Maybe someone will find joy in the game again and want to reactivate their subscription. Then the Alpha clone becomes an Omega clone and it is possible to continue playing without restrictions.
The Free2Play mode is well received
CCP Games has also been positively surprised by the players’ response to the Free2Play mode. According to Andie Nordgren, it is very well received. The players are excited, even though a lot of negative feedback was actually expected.
But the Ascension update offers more than just the Free2Play mode. This includes a new tutorial that introduces players to the MMO and the game world. It is heavily story-driven and even features voice acting. The story is told in several chapters, in which you choose a faction. Afterwards, you are released into the sandbox.
This very story-driven and narratively dense tutorial replaces the old introduction to the game. Of course, you are not locked into the chosen faction. At least as an Omega clone, you have the option to switch to another party, as you can also learn the skills of other races. In addition, there are further changes, such as to the character sheet and the explosions. Ascension is available for free.
