Currently, Warhammer 40,000: Eternal Crusade is in Early Access on Steam – but what genre is the game supposed to have when it is “finished”?
Eternal Crusade does not want to be a lobby shooter
A few weeks ago, Warhammer 40,000: Eternal Crusade transitioned into Early Access on Steam and has since been more easily accessible to a broader audience. However, those who play the game might quickly fall into the misconception that it is intended to be a generic lobby shooter, which is not the case. The developers clarify this situation in a “State of the Crusade”, something like a “status update”.
Eternal Crusade aims to offer a large, explorable game world where territorial battles decide which faction controls specific areas. The core aspect of it is combat, and only when that runs smoothly will they implement “the rest”. For now, the game looks like a lobby shooter – but only for a certain period.
Somewhat cheekily, it is written: “If you want to help us develop the shooter part of the game further, please check out the Early Access, but do not expect any single-universe-open-world-Skyrim-RPG including battles with thousands of players. The technology to create that is not ready yet (but it will come).”
Finally, it even states: “You can read all 11 previous posts, but no. We are not “just” a lobby shooter, just as Destiny or The Division are not after years of development. Since we are currently putting all our money into WAR instead of advertising for the game, we would appreciate if you could clarify this misunderstanding wherever you see it.”
