Big Promises in Eternal Crusade – is that realistic?
Warhammer 40,000: Eternal Crusade is set to launch next week on Steam – at least in America. The developers have taken the time to clarify several points on the Steam forum to ease the concerns of fans and critics. Many voices have been raised saying that the game is “not ready yet” and the developers agree: an online game is never truly “finished” nowadays and they will continue to work on it for months and years, constantly adding new features to provide fans with the “ultimate Warhammer experience”.
Moreover, the developers are enticing with a very special promise: all updates for Warhammer 40,000: Eternal Crusade will be free for life.
“What I want to clarify is that despite general opinion, we do not intend to disappear. The goal is lifetime, free expansions to create the ultimate way to experience your “Warhammer 40,000” fantasies. That is our mission.
We will be ready for launch and we will continue to grow for you for free, and we thank you for your continued support. We wouldn’t be here if you didn’t support us. (…) We know there are some doubters (because we also read the negative and not just the positive reviews), but that will not stop us from trying to create the game we dream of.”
Mein-MMO thinks: While such an extensive promise sounds fantastic, it does leave us a bit skeptical. Too many companies have promised free DLCs and also guaranteed that the game would “never be Pay2Win.” Many players fear that the “premature” release is now approaching to refill the coffers. As ambitious as the plan is to continue improving the game for years after release, it seems unrealistic to do so without further funding (aside from an in-game shop).
As always, time will tell what will come of these promises.
