The MMORPG The Elder Scrolls Online offers you not only large expansions but also many smaller DLCs that need to be purchased additionally. We will share tricks on how to get the game content at the best price.
What kind of game content is that? ESO currently releases a major expansion every year along with 3 smaller DLCs. For 2020, this means:
- DLC Harrowstorm on February 24th for PC
- Release of the Greymoor expansion on May 18th for PC
- DLC 2 in Q3
- DLC 3 in Q4
The latest expansion must always be purchased for real money, while the DLCs and older expansions can be bought for crowns, the currency from the shop.
What is included in the DLCs? The small DLCs usually contain supplementary stories and areas to the game world. Some DLCs also include special dungeons and rewards.
Currently, there are 14 individual DLCs. If you were to buy them individually today, on March 26th, it would cost you 23,000 crowns and depending on the crown package between 130 and over 200 euros. A detailed list can be found at the end of the post.
We will share 3 methods on how you can get this content cheaper.
1. ESO+ Subscription
What is ESO+? ESO+ is the optional subscription for The Elder Scrolls Online. You pay 12.99 euros per month for 30 days and can reduce the price to 10.41 euros per month if you subscribe for a whole year.
How does this help with the DLCs? ESO+ allows you access to all DLCs as long as the subscription is active. When it expires, you retain all items and progress earned.
Only the access to the special dungeons, stories, and areas will expire.
How can you save here? Very active players can complete all DLC content within one or two months. This way, you experience all content for only 26 euros.
At the same time, you receive 3,300 crowns passively (also around 26 euros). Up to two DLCs can even be permanently unlocked during a sale.
2. Waiting for the right sales and bundles
What is being waited for? In ESO, there are recurring sales events where you can directly obtain the crown packages at a lower price. The last one was around the Christmas holidays.
After that, you wait for selected DLCs to be offered at a lower price as well. This often happens in certain bundles.
How much can you save here? Depending on the action and package, you can save up to 40% when purchasing the crowns. Additionally, there is a discount on the DLCs, which is usually only given during special events or anniversaries.
Also, you should pay attention to special packages where DLCs are bundled or crowns are offered at a lower price:
- There is a The Elder Scrolls Online: Starter Pack for 9.99 euros, which includes crowns worth 12.99 euros plus additional items.
If you really want to own all the content, you should buy one of the most expensive crown packages all at once during a crown sale and then wait for discounts on the DLCs. Otherwise, unlocking through ESO+ is only slightly more expensive.
3. Tamriel Crown Exchange
What is that? Tamriel Crown Exchange is a community that ensures that players can obtain items from the crown shop for in-game gold (via ESO Forum).
The crown shop offers a gift function through which DLCs and other content can be gifted. You pay another player to buy content for you for real money.
Tamriel Crown Exchange ensures that the transfer runs safely and that you are not scammed. However, there is no 100% guarantee that everything runs without fraud. So be a bit cautious with this tip.
How much can you save here? Since you buy the DLCs with in-game currency, you pay 0 euros for the game content.
The current exchange rate is 400 gold per crown on European servers and PC.
What DLCs are available and how much do they cost?
- Imperial City: Free
- Orsinium: 3,000 crowns (21 euros)
- Thieves Guild: 2,000 crowns (14 euros)
- Dark Brotherhood: 2,000 crowns (14 euros)
- Clockwork City: 2,000 crowns (14 euros)
- Horns of the Reach: 1,500 crowns (13 euros)
- Shadows of the Hist: 1,500 crowns (13 euros)
- Dragon Bones: 1,500 crowns (13 euros)
- Wolfhunter: 1,500 crowns (13 euros)

- Scalebreaker: 1,500 crowns (13 euros)
- Dragonhold: 2,000 crowns (14 euros)
- Harrowstorm: 1,500 crowns (13 euros)
You save the most money when you buy 21,000 crowns for 125 euros at once. Then the DLCs for 1,500 crowns cost only about 9 euros.
What about the expansions? Whenever a new expansion is released, it comes in a bundle with the previous chapters. So you usually don’t have to worry about purchasing these.
Only when a chapter is newly released and you already own the previous ones, do you still have to buy it. However, there is a slightly cheaper upgrade version, so only newcomers have to pay the full price.
