Currently, an event is running in the MMORPG The Elder Scrolls Online where you can get a bonus on your experience gained. We at mein MMO show you the best ways to quickly earn as much experience points as possible.
What event is currently taking place? The New Year’s Festival – A Christmas and New Year’s event in ESO.
Additionally, you can find out everything about the start, end, and content of the events in our ESO Event Ticker. Be sure to check it out to learn more about the current event. There’s not only extra experience waiting for you.
How to get your experience boost overall
You can increase this to an experience bonus of up to 346%. The trick is to combine multiple experience bonuses. However, this only works in certain combinations. Not everything is combinable in ESO.
1. Get the 100% Event XP Buff
For each event with an experience bonus, there is a unique tool (formerly: memento). You can find the tools in your inventory (I) under Quick Access. Equip it in your Quick Access and use it.
The exception is the 100% experience bonus for the Explorer Festivities. It does not need to be activated.
Here’s a list of the XP events and the corresponding tool:
- Festival of Fools 🠒 Fool’s Pie
- ESO Anniversary Festival 🠒 Anniversary Cake
- Witches Festival 🠒 Witchmother’s Whistle
- New Year’s Festival 🠒 Breda’s Bottomless Mead Mug
How do I get the tool? If you do not already have it, you must first complete the corresponding event quest. You can find this during the respective event in the Crown Store (,) either directly in the showcase or Events 🠒 Quests. The quest is also free.
Here’s an overview of the event quests:
- New Year’s Festival 🠒 “The New Year’s Festival”
- Witches Festival 🠒 “Witchmother’s Bargain”.
2. Use a Scroll or a Potion (up to 150%)
The nice thing about events with experience bonuses is that you can further increase the associated experience bonus. You just need to combine one (important: really only 1!) of the following items with the event buff:
- Crown Learning Scroll (50% experience for 2 hours)
- Great Gold Coast Learning Scroll (100% experience for 1 hour)
- Luxurious Gold Coast Learning Scroll (150% experience for 1 hour)
- Psijic Ambrosia (50% experience for 30 minutes)
- Etheric Ambrosia (100% experience for 30 minutes)
- Mystical Etheric Ambrosia (150% experience for 30 minutes)
3. Wear the right gear for up to 77% additional experience
Craft armor with the learning trait. This experience bonus, however, is limited to killing enemies. Depending on quality, the bonus varies by a few percentage points:
- Normal (white): 7 x 7% experience gained from killed enemies 🠒 49%
- Fine (green): 7 x 8% experience gained from killed enemies 🠒 56%
- Superior (blue): 7 x 9% experience gained from killed enemies 🠒 63%
- Epic (purple): 7 x 10% experience gained from killed enemies 🠒 70%
- Legendary (gold): 7 x 11% experience gained from killed enemies 🠒 77%
4. Equip the right weapon(s) for up to 9% additional experience
Your weapons can also gain the learning trait. Depending on the type of weapon, the individual percentages vary. Overall, you can reach the same percentage of experience bonus with either 2 one-handed weapons or with a two-handed weapon or staff.
However, keep in mind that only your active action bar (skill bar) counts.
As with armor, the experience bonus is limited to killing enemies. It is also dependent on the quality of your weapon. Here’s how it looks for two-handed and staves:
- Normal (white): 5% experience gained from killed enemies 🠒 5%
- Fine (green): 6% experience gained from killed enemies 🠒 6%
- Superior (blue): 7% experience gained from killed enemies 🠒 7%
- Epic (purple): 8% experience gained from killed enemies 🠒 8%
- Legendary (gold): 9% experience gained from killed enemies 🠒 9%
For one-handed weapons, you receive half the experience. However, you can equip 2 of them. This leads to the following percentages for the respective quality:
- Normal (white): 2 x 2.5% experience gained from killed enemies 🠒 5%
- Fine (green): 2 x 3% experience gained from killed enemies 🠒 6%
- Superior (blue): 2 x 3.5% experience gained from killed enemies 🠒 7%
- Epic (purple): 2 x 4% experience gained from killed enemies 🠒 8%
- Legendary (gold): 2 x 4.5% experience gained from killed enemies 🠒 9%
However, if you need another trait on one of your weapons, you can always combine the learning trait, of course. For example, a dagger with learning and another one with reinforced, if you need more self-healing from the vigor.
5. Marry another player
With Mara’s Oaths, you and your spouse receive 10% more experience when you adventure together. The item is available in the Crown Store for 1,000 crowns. But you still need to marry the other player.
How to marry in ESO? After a player purchases the item “Mara’s Oaths” in the Crown Store, you need to visit a shrine of Mara. You can find this in the capitals of the 3 alliances: Daggerfall (Deshaan), Wayrest (Sturmhaven), Elden Root (Grahtwood).
Invite your fiancé or fiancée to a group. Use the item from your quick access in front of Mara’s shrine. A successful wedding awaits you with a glowing animation and you will each receive a ring: Mara’s Oaths.
Leveling quickly under Level 50
Below level 50, you unfortunately lack some of the options that you have with a level 50 character. However, there are also good ways for lower-level characters to quickly gain experience. The following activities are worthwhile:
- the daily random dungeon (Group & Activity Finder; P)
- all additional dungeons including quests
- Grinding at grinding spots
You should ideally not grind alone: You gain the most experience in a group of 2 people. An experienced player is always the best choice, but it is also possible with other players. You need to test your limits a bit and see how many enemies you can defeat at once.
Here are some grinding spots for you:
- Spellscar (Wayshrine of Spellscar, north of the capital Belkarth in Craglorn)
- Catacombs of Skyreach (group dungeon, west of the wayshrine in Craglorn)
It’s also worthwhile to repeat the 2nd round of the 2nd level in the Blackrose Prison (normal). However, this costs you some soul gems and is also not suitable for players who get bored with too much monotony. The arena, originally designed for 4 players, is located in the Gloomspore. For optimal XP grind, team up with 2 players.
Leveling quickly above Level 50 (Champion Points)
Above level 50, there’s another way to gain a lot of experience: Master writs. It’s super simple, you just need enough materials and inventory space. And of course, the master writs. I personally recommend you first stay away from jewelry writs since the materials are exceedingly expensive.
How do I get master writs? Once you reach level 50 in one of the crafts, you can receive a master writ from the daily crafting quests.
Master writs grant quite a bit of experience points. Therefore, it’s worth saving the master writs until an event where there is an experience bonus. Until then, you can take care of missing crafting styles, traits, or materials.
How to gain especially a lot of experience with crafting
Step 1: Collect all your master writs on one of your characters. Of course, this character needs to know as many styles as possible and have the required abilities for trait and level. Also, make sure to have enough inventory space for the items you are going to craft.
Step 2: Visit a home that includes all set tables. If you don’t know anyone with such a home, just ask in zone chat and within the community. Players are usually very helpful in ESO. In case you really can’t find or know a player, you need to visit the crafting stations in the open world.
A detailed description of how to find these easily is provided in point 2 of the guide ESO: Guide to Transmutation and Reconstruction – How to Get Your Desired Equipment.
Step 3: Craft all the master writs you have. If you have a lot of gold and it’s easy for you to part with it, you can also craft the jewelry writs. But let me tell you that this is significantly more expensive in gold than the other writs. The materials for jewelry are relatively costly.
For PC players, there’s a handy add-on:
With a click in the boxes on the right side, you can activate automatic crafting at the corresponding crafting station. If you have the finished item, the corresponding master writ (not read recommended) in your inventory will be marked. You can now select it without hesitation and hand in the quest.
Step 4: Travel to the quest giver. You will find the NPC Rolis Hlaalu in the capitals of the 3 alliances (Daggerfall, Wayrest, Elden Root) at the location where you usually turn in your crafting dailies.
Step 5: Now activate all your XP buffs:
- The event tool
- Scroll or potion
- Ring of Mara (if you have a group with your spouse in ESO)
Step 6: Now take all completed writs one after another and turn in the quest.
Final Step: Watch the experience points roll in!
