The MMORPG The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) will receive a new type of item with the expansion “Greymoor” in Summer 2020: Mythic Gear. These items are similar to Exotics in games like Destiny 2 or The Division 2. Players can only wear one at a time, but they grant special and unique bonuses. Two of these items are already known.
How do you acquire Mythic Gear? With the “Greymoor” expansion in May 2020, a new activity will come to The Elder Scrolls Online that differs from previous quests: the search for antiquities.
The hunt for antiquities seems to draw inspiration from professions like “Archaeology” from World of Warcraft. The antiquities are marketed as a new gameplay experience that has nothing to do with quests and combat, but rather represents a new playstyle in ESO, similar to housing.
Such antiquities are said to exist in the past, present, and future zones of ESO. It is said that players should feel like Indiana Jones when they hunt for the ancient treasures.
Players will complete two mini-games that come with skill lines. The skill lines are intended to help players improve in the mini-games:
- In Scrying (looking out), players search for clues about the location where they can find antiquities. This mini-game is said to be inspired by a “Colors & Shape” game.
- Then, players travel to the location indicated by the first mini-game.
- Here, they begin excavating, which works similarly to Minesweeper or Battleship, it is said.
The rewards from excavations include:
- Emotes
- Cosmetic items
- Housing items
- A siege weapon
- A mount
- Mythic items
The rewards are said to be available to everyone, allowing players to work towards mythic items even if they can only invest an hour in ESO occasionally.
What are Mythic Items? These are special items:
- They come with 160 CP
- Only available in golden variants
- Players can only wear one of these items at a time
- They grant special, unique bonuses
All of this was explained by Creative Director Rich Lambert during the presentation of Blackheart of Skyrim last Thursday (via youtube, starting at 42 minutes).
What are examples of mythic items? Lambert mentioned 2 examples of such mythic items:
- A type of jewelry that increases the player’s movement speed in combat – outside of combat, the bonus even doubles.
- A heavy chest armor that restores Magicka whenever a player blocks an attack.
Other changes coming with Greymoor include a change to player vampires.
Already in February, a performance update is expected to shrink ESO by almost 30 GB:
