Today, on November 2nd, the new DLC Markarth for The Elder Scrolls Online was released on PC, Mac, and Stadia. In it, you can explore new areas, face a solo arena, and conclude the story surrounding the Black Heart in Skyrim. We at MeinMMO reveal what to expect and how to get started.
What’s in the new DLC? Markarth is the last DLC to be released this year in ESO. At the same time, it concludes the Skyrim year, which began in February 2020 with the DLC Harrowstorm and peaked in the Greymoor expansion.
In the latest DLC Markarth, you can expect:
- Two new maps – Reik, where the beautiful city of Markarth is located, and the Arkthzand caverns
- The new arena “Ground of the Vateshran, which is said to be similar to a solo dungeon
- A story surrounding vampires
- New rewards, achievements, and collectibles

What did Update 28 bring for base players? If you do not wish to purchase or play the new DLC, you can still benefit from the accompanying patch.
This adds hundreds of item sets to your collections. You can reconstruct them using transmutation crystals and thus re-dress your character.
In addition, there were improvements to the user interface for crafting writs and client optimizations for more game stability.
Markarth – The First Steps
How do I get the DLC? To experience Markarth, you need either a subscription to ESO+ or you must purchase the DLC for real money. Markarth costs 2,000 crowns. If you prefer to buy with real money, you will have to pay around €16.
Only the prologue quest leading up to the expansion can be played for free, by purchasing it for 0 crowns in the shop.
How do I access the new areas? To experience the new content of Markarth, you have two options:
- You can teleport directly to the northern wayshrine of Markarth via the map
- You can be guided directly there via the prologue quest “The Despot of Markarth”.
From there, you can explore the new city and complete your first quests.
For the basic gameplay content of Markarth, you do not need the Greymoor expansion. However, you can only experience the finale of the story if you have completed Greymoor beforehand.
