Elsweyr, the new expansion for The Elder Scrolls Online, is coming to the consoles PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Here are 5 things you must know before the launch.
What is Elsweyr? Elsweyr is the 3rd major chapter expansion for the MMORPG The Elder Scrolls Online. It features three major highlights:
- You will explore for the first time a completely new area, which has never existed in this form in an Elder Scrolls game
- You can finally play the Necromancer class
- For the first time, there are dragons in ESO
When is Elsweyr coming? The new chapter has been available for PC since May 20th. It will be released for PS4 and Xbox One on June 4, 2019, after the necessary maintenance.
How long will the maintenance take? The maintenance for the two console megaservers is expected to last according to the forum from 4:00 AM to 11:00 AM. The cash shop and account system will be down until 4:00 PM.
In the meantime, maintenance on the PS4 has been completed on schedule. You can now download the update with 37.15 GB and then play Elsweyr.
However, the update on Xbox One was delayed. The megaservers were only back online around 1 PM. The update there is 57.73 gigabytes in size and can now be downloaded.
How can I play Elsweyr? If you want to explore Elsweyr, you have to purchase the addon. It is available in various editions, both as an upgrade for an existing account or as a complete package with the base game and all previous addons (Morrowind and Summerset).
The corresponding update, which among other things introduces the guild finder tool, is free for everyone.
How Elsweyr is being received so far
On PC, fans have been able to play the new addon for 2 weeks now. The feedback has mostly been positive. Especially the new area of the exotic Khajiit catfolk with their 17 different subspecies and their bizarre drug addiction is perceived as both beautiful and interesting.

The new Necromancer, which fans have been demanding since the launch in 2014, is also very well received. He is by no means the dreaded “wizard with undead pets“, but rather a truly unique class with meaningful and fun features.
Overall, many fans say that Elsweyr is the most beautiful and best expansion of ESO to date, which no fan of the game should miss.
5 things console players need to know about Elsweyr
The following 5 points are essential to know before you start with Elsweyr on the console. Here you will learn, among other things, how to get to Elsweyr, how to kill dragons instead of taming them, and if the Necromancer is worthwhile.
1 – How to get to Elsweyr
Can you simply go to Elsweyr? Indeed, because Elsweyr is also part of the overall concept “One Tamriel”. This means you can easily visit Elsweyr even as a total newbie character. Your hero scales with the world.

Can I also start directly in Elsweyr? This is also possible without any issues. If you create a new character, for example the Necromancer, you will start directly with a new tutorial in Elsweyr and immediately learn about the new zone.
Is there a quest leading to Elsweyr? Not directly. However, when you enter Elsweyr, you can immediately head to Stonefalls and meet the Chancellor Abnur Tharn there. He will then start the main story.
However, it is worth doing the prologue quest beforehand. This can also be done without purchasing Elsweyr, and you receive the quest by obtaining it for free in the cash shop under the “Quests” tab. It is the item “Sealed Imperial Summoning”.
How exactly do I get into the new area? The fastest way to get to Elsweyr is to directly select the way shrine of the new capital Krempen.
Alternatively, you can also “travel by foot” to Elsweyr by using either the gate in the northeast of Grahtwood or the entrance in the northeast of the Rift.
2 – What you need to know about the new Necromancer class
These roles does the Necromancer fill: Like most classes in ESO, the Necromancer can excel in all roles. It is suitable as a tank, damage dealer, and even healer!

What is special about the Necromancer? Necromancers use many different elements to deal damage. They also use undead servants, which do not last long but will soon depart.
They often leave behind corpses that – along with dead enemies – provide significant bonuses for the Necromancer in a mini-game.
Cool detail: Certain skills of the Necromancer are considered a crime in the game, and if you are caught summoning the dead, you will be arrested and have to pay a fine.
That’s why you should play the Necromancer: The Necromancer is especially suitable for players who:
- Like to play tactically and fully utilize the corpse mini-game
- Want a versatile class
- Are drawn to the dark flair of a brooding anti-hero
3 – How dragon fights work
Where can you find dragons? Dragons are another major highlight of Elsweyr. The flying monsters are basically world events, similar to the dolmens or geysers from the base game or Summerset.

However, unlike the mentioned events, dragons are mobile and fly over the map until they land somewhere and cause havoc. So you need to be on site in time to combat the beast.
How do you defeat the dragons? Dragons are huge monsters that can take down individual players with just one attack. So you need to approach them in a large group and pay close attention.
Dragons wreak havoc with their fire, magic, and massive blows on their opponents. In reward, you always receive a substantial amount of loot and tons of experience points.
4 – How to prepare for Elsweyr
What you should do before going to Elsweyr: If you are an existing player playing a new character, you should already prepare your gear beforehand. Ideally with the “Training” trait, then you will gain more XP in combat and level up faster.

Then it is worthwhile to stock up on well-charged soul stones, especially for the dragon fights. Because you will often meet your demise.
Otherwise, you should also have plenty of buff food and healing potions at your current level, especially if you aim for the new trial.
And even though the fights in Elsweyr scale with your hero, you should have the best possible equipment. So farm for it beforehand or build a nice set. Someone from the helpful ESO community might also assist you here.
5 – What you should accomplish in Elsweyr
Unlock all way shrines: Elsweyr is surrounded by a main road that runs from Stonefalls in the northwest down south and then completely circles the land, ending again in Krempen in the northeast.

Most way shrines are located along this road, and you should explore them as soon as possible. This way, you can quickly and effortlessly change your position later, especially when a dragon appears in remote locations, and you want to hunt it.
Get all sky shards: In Elsweyr, you can find a whopping 18 sky shards. That corresponds to a substantial 6 skill points. This is a great advantage, especially for new heroes. Here you can find where the sky shards are located in a guide.
Don’t forget the side quests: As tempting as it is to follow the main story: Don’t ignore the side activities. They are – as in all Elder Scrolls games – the secret highlights of the addon, and every fan of the setting should check them out.
You will learn a lot about the culture of the Khajiit, their history, and the mysteries of this ancient land. Especially the quest at the place “Stitches” is particularly cool thanks to drunken, talking “house cats”.
Don’t miss our new stream for ESO: On our streaming channel MAX (Monsters and Explosions), we will be streaming ESO on PS4 on Thursday, June 6, 2019, from 6 PM to 8 PM. Be there!
