With the update planned for June of the MMORPG The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO), a new type of quest will be introduced. Through this, you can obtain items that are available in crown crates.
What are these quests? Endeavors are daily and weekly quests that present you with various tasks. These include:
- Acquire items through pickpocketing
- Complete quests
- Defeat enemies using class or weapon abilities
- Sell items to vendors
- Craft different types of items
- Defeat various types of monsters
- Harvest resource nodes and more
The number of these endeavors you can complete per day and week varies. So you must always pay attention to how many are available in the current week. The missions are designed to be accessible to all players and support every play style. You can see which of these new quests are active in the new Endeavors menu. They are automatically active, and you will also receive rewards immediately upon completing the mission.
Earn Items from Crown Crates
What do endeavors bring you? You receive rewards for each completed quest, including gold and EXP. Additionally, there are the Endeavor Seals. This is a new currency. How many you earn per quest depends on the specific task.
What can you do with the Endeavor Seals? You can use this new currency to buy items that you would otherwise find in the crown crates. This includes items such as
- Companions
- Potions
- Scrolls of Learning
- Cosmetic items
- Apex Mounts
What’s special about this? These items can be earned through endeavors for the first time. So you don’t have to buy crown crates to obtain the items.
What’s behind this? The crown crates were very controversial when introduced in 2016. Because fundamentally, they represent a loot box mechanic. You purchase the crates for money in the crown store, but you don’t know what items are inside. There are always four random items, with a chance to get a fifth. If you draw items from one of the crates that you already possess, they are converted into Crown Gems. With these gems, you can then purchase collectibles of your choice from the current season of crown crates.
So it’s a kind of loot box. However, Microsoft has a very special stance on loot boxes. The guidelines state (via Xbox.com): “Virtual items in loot boxes can always be earned through gameplay.”
Since Bethesda is now part of Microsoft, the crown crate system alongside the introduction of endeavors will soon align with these guidelines.
What do ESO players think about this? That you will soon be able to earn items from crown crates is well received in the ESO community:
- Dirthara writes (via reddit): “This is great!!! Sometimes crown crates have some cool items, but there are so many players who refuse to support gambling/loot boxes on principle that they never spend a cent.”
- Regi413 expresses surprise (via reddit): “I didn’t expect this. But I think it’s good.”
- AtraxMorgue is also pleased (via reddit): “I really like this. Let’s just hope you don’t have to grind too much to get the rarer crate items.”
- ObiMeowKatnobi explains (via reddit): “Microsoft’s loot box guidelines state that virtual items in loot boxes can always be earned. Now you know where the change comes from.”
So it’s a good thing that you will soon be able to earn items from crown crates also through the endeavors in ESO. But we will still see how long it takes to get the desired items. Expect to do some grinding.
With ESO Blackwood, NPC companions will also be introduced into the MMORPG. MeinMMO author Alexander Leitsch was able to see them in a preview event and shares his experiences with you.
