In The Elder Scrolls Online (TESO), vampires are greatly feared. Your player heroes can also become vampires in ESO. How this works even in 2020 and after Greymoor, we reveal here in our vampire guide to ESO.
What is the deal with vampires? Vampires are, alongside the dark Daedra, the terror of the world of The Elder Scrolls Online. The undead bloodsuckers are incredibly strong and look very cool with their red eyes.
In the past, there were whole vampire hordes in ESO’s PvP that dominated everything due to their superior abilities. Luckily, those times are over, but people still regularly ask in chat about the possibility of becoming a vampire themselves.
Update: This article from 2017 was updated and revised on June 8, 2020. Among other things, the structure was improved and the new vampire information from Greymoor was included.
ESO – Becoming a Vampire in 2020 – Bite from Players, NPCs or in the Shop?
How to become a vampire: To become a vampire in The Elder Scrolls Online, you actually just need to wander around at night in certain areas and hope to randomly encounter “blood fiends”.
Or you can let a friendly player turn you into a vampire with a specific skill. Alternatively, you can simply buy the vampire fun in the real money shop. In the following paragraphs, you will learn everything about the three methods to become a vampire.
Become an ESO Vampire – Do it Yourself
How to become a standard vampire: If you want to become a vampire as cheaply as possible, you should bring a lot of patience and luck. Follow these steps:
- Wander around at night in the earlier endgame regions Rift, Bangkorai, and the Harvest. At night, around midnight, vampires (blood fiends) or werewolves appear in specific locations. In the past, these spawns seemed to depend on the moon phase, so that vampires only appeared at new moons and wolves only at full moons. However, both creatures now seem to spawn at random.
- To get infected with the vampire curse, you need to be hit by such a blood fiend. Each hit has a certain chance of infecting you with the vampire disease. So if you want to become a vampire, you should remove all items and buffs that protect you from such diseases. Beware! If you have already been infected by a wandering werewolf, you will never receive the vampire curse as long as you have the werewolf disease. So keep away from the werewolves!
- Once you have received the vampire curse from a blood fiend, go to the nearest way shrine. There, a vampire NPC will greet you and give you a quest if you want to become a vampire. If you’ve changed your mind, you can refuse here and be healed in the temple.
- If you accept the quest, you will be guided to the vampire hideout, where you can complete the quest. After that, you become a vampire and gain access to the corresponding quest line.
Pro Tip: If you have the pet “Sanguine’s Black Goat”, you may notice that the goat’s eyes sometimes glow red. This is not a bug, but indicates that the blood fiends are currently active. So use the goat as an indicator of whether the search is worth it.
Become an ESO Vampire – “Please, bite me!”
This is faster: There is also an alternative to the lengthy questing. If someone is a vampire, they can develop a skill that infects other players with vampirism.
This skill is a level 6 ability called “Blood Ritual.” The vampire and their “victim” must go to a blood altar, where the vampire can infect the victim.
The quest then starts like in the solo version. Some vampires charge a high price for this “bite” and offer it in the trading chat. Occasionally, unscrupulous business vampires even kill their wild NPC relatives so that no one receives the “bite” for free.
Watch out: When you go for a “bite for cash”, there is no guarantee that your counterpart will actually bite you. Some players simply pocket the money and leave you unbitten and several thousand gold poorer.
However, there are also enough altruistic vampires who are happy to give the bite for free. Moreover, guild members might be willing to bite you for free.
Guaranteed to become a vampire in ESO – For only 12.99 euros!
How to buy the vampire bite: If you don’t want to grind endlessly and deal with the vampire mafia, you can simply buy the bite in the crown store.
For 1500 crowns (12.99 euros) you can instantly become a vampire and save yourself the quest. You will then immediately become a bloodthirsty vampire and can normally upgrade your vampire skills.
What does it mean to become a vampire?
These are the basics of being a vampire: Vampires receive a completely new skill line with passive and active skills. The vampire abilities were significantly reworked with update 26 and the release of Greymoor. Where it was once useful to remain as hungry as possible, it is now more beneficial to fill yourself with blood and reach high levels of the passive buff “Blood Curse”. This results in the following:
- With each level of the blood curse, the cost of your vampire skills decreases
- There are additional passive abilities as your level in blood curse increases
However, a high blood curse also has disadvantages:
- Health regeneration is reduced
- You take more damage from fire attacks
- Non-vampire abilities become more expensive
Oh no, I actually don’t want to be a vampire anymore! If at the end you realize “This vampire doesn’t suit me, I’d rather become a werewolf“, or “Oh no, the disadvantages of vampirism outweigh the benefits for me”, you can also remove the annoying curse back in the temple of Arkay.
