ESO Greymoor – What I like best about it besides beating vampires

In The Elder Scrolls Online the new chapter add-on Greymoor will be released soon. This is part of the big Skyrim theme in 2020 and speaks to our MeinMMO author Jürgen Horn multiple times.

What is Greymoor about? Greymoor will be the fourth major chapter expansion of ESO. The add-on is being released a bit later than planned due to Corona, on May 26 for PC and on June 9 for consoles. The theme this time is the popular region of Skyrim as well as a fight against evil witches and vampires.

That’s why I want to play Greymoor!

This is what excites me about Greymoor: I, Jürgen, have been a fan of ESO since the beta, and even though I have never played the game continuously, but always in bits and as a solo player, the regular return to Tamriel always feels like a little vacation for me.

This is especially true when you can experience new places and stories, as is the case with the upcoming launch of Greymoor. I can hardly wait for this for the following reasons.

Reason 1 – It’s Skyrim!

This is why Skyrim is always good: Well, one doesn’t need to say much about this point. Skyrim was simply a wonderful game and enchanted from the very first minute with its beautiful landscapes and the rough but warmhearted Nords who lived there. The story about the dragons was much less interesting than exploring vast snowfields or dark graves.

Anyone who has seen the first images and videos of Greymoor should immediately feel a wave of nostalgic feelings for the good old days. I felt this back in the day with the Morrowind add-on, and I am firmly convinced that Greymoor will also capture and excite me in this way.

Additionally, I am a huge fan of everything related to Viking themes, and Skyrim and the Nords fit perfectly into that. I am already looking forward to cool fur and leather outfits for my Khajiit.

Reason 2 – The overall look and atmosphere are promising

This is what I like about the presentation: Greymoor lives up to its name. Because the Skyrim we get to see here is a dark place full of dreadful mysteries. Sinister witch cults with eerie willow puppets perform dark rituals. Ominous storm clouds are gathering, and in dark caves, unspeakable horrors lurk.

The landscapes are simply delightful.

After the colorful Elsweyr, this is a pleasant contrast and creates the right mood that fits the entire year’s theme of “The Dark Heart of Skyrim.” Moreover, the developers manage to blend the warm nostalgia with a feeling of subtle horror, which I enjoy very much.

Reason 3 – New mini-games with the antiquities system

This is what I’m looking forward to: I like variety and distraction in games. Therefore, I love well-made mini-games. The newly announced antiquities system of Greymoor fits perfectly into that. Especially since mini-games unlock more lore and cosmetics in the game.

And hardly any game has as much backstory as the Elder Scrolls games. So, I expect to find many new, cool pieces of information about my favorite game world here.

Reason 4 – Reunion with cool old NPCs

I’m looking forward to these NPCs: I was totally excited when I saw Lyris Titanborn again in the dungeons from the Harrowstorm DLC. Not everyone likes the rough half-giantess, but I have thought she was awesome since the first minute in ESO.

Lyris Titanborn is one of my favorite NPCs.

Because she rescued my poor, soul-harried Khajiit from the dark prison of Molag-Bal back then. Since then, she has had a special place in my heart. The loyal and brave Lyris accompanied me throughout the base game, and I was unhappy that she didn’t appear anymore afterwards. When Sai Sahan suddenly reappeared in Elsweyr, I also hoped to see Lyris again.

I was even happier when she suddenly stood in front of me again after a spectacular appearance in the dungeon. I am already looking forward to more cool appearances from the tough warrior with the voice of Commander Shepard.

Reason 5 – It’s going to be huge!

Therefore, the size of the region is a highlight: Greymoor is supposed to be huge, even larger than Elsweyr, which was already quite substantial. This is probably mainly because, in addition to the surface world, large parts of the underground will play a role.

This excites me in multiple ways:

  • More areas also mean more quests and which are always particularly complex affairs full of story in ESO.
  • You can explore and discover more. Traditionally, the developers pack tons of cool details and hidden goodies into the areas of the add-ons. Since Greymoor is so large, there will likely be more cool stuff in it.
  • Especially the vast underground will likely offer many secrets to explore.

Reason 6 – Finally, more gameplay variety with Mythic Gear

This is what I hope for: The combat system of ESO is honestly not one of my favorites in the game. So, I am pleased when the rigid system is softened a bit, and you get more gameplay options.

That’s why I already celebrate the new Mythic Gear. Because they allow completely new gameplay techniques. Since you can only wear one piece at a time, I can now adapt my build even more to my play style.

I also think I already know what my Khajiit will definitely get: the jewelry that doubles her speed! This way, she can get to enemies faster, stab them, and then escape again.

Reason 7, the most important reason – I can beat up vampires!

This is why it’s so important to me: I can’t stand vampires. Hardly any fantasy monster, except maybe zombies, is that worn out and clichéd. And yes, this doesn’t necessarily apply to the vampires in ESO, because they have a cool lore and are presented atmospherically.

Nevertheless, I simply hate vampires, and I just don’t like them. They are just cowardly, sneaky creatures that don’t engage in honest combat and also weave intrigues and hidden themselves among their victims. I prefer honest monsters that face me in a decent duel.

Therefore, I will despite the many new vampire revisions in Greymoor still not play a bloodsucker. I have never done that in an Elder Scrolls game, and I’m certainly not starting now. But what I like to do even more is to beat up the foolish bloodsuckers and crush their fangs! Approximately as depicted in the trailer for Greymoor. Take that, vampire losers!

I love the scene where the cowardly vampire gets his face smashed.

Therefore, I am particularly excited that vampires will be the main antagonists. I look forward to truly detestable enemies that can be taken down with a clear conscience. I found the dragons in Elsweyr dignified and majestic. I always felt a bit sorry for killing them. I don’t have those concerns with bloodsuckers. Especially the vile boss vampire has a fixed date with my sword.

Conclusion – Not a new Elsweyr, but it will suit me

Whether Greymoor can replace my beloved Elsweyr with the wacky Khajiit in my personal ranking of the best ESO add-ons is uncertain. After all, the Khajiit bonus is significant. But I am sure that Greymoor will completely captivate me and provide me with many hours of gameplay enjoyment. I can hardly wait to start on May 26. See you in Skyrim!
