Today, May 26, the new add-on Greymoor for the MMORPG The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) is launching on PC. This begins with a long server maintenance. Players believe that server issues are to be expected when it starts later.
Update 08:30 AM, May 27: Overnight, most issues with Greymoor have likely been resolved, the game is now playable and everyone can log in. However, there still seems to be a need for maintenance.
From 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM our time, the servers will be shut down again. We hope that there will not be further issues then.
Update 10:40 PM: Due to the login issues, maintenance work on the servers is being carried out again. Another downtime of about one to two hours is to be expected.
Update 08:10 PM: The issues with the loading screen have now also been addressed by the developers. They are investigating this and ask for patience.
Update 07:10 PM: Meanwhile, the issues seem to be resolved and the servers are said to be open. However, some players still report issues with login during the character loading screen.
Update 06:20 PM: The problems are not entirely resolved yet, but it seems there are plans to open the servers within this hour.
Players who had already logged in without purchasing Greymoor will likely still see it marked as “purchased” in the store. However, this is a UI bug. Those who wish to buy the expansion must do so manually through the website, explains a community manager (via ESO Forum).
Update 05:20 PM: The servers are still offline. However, the error regarding the codes for the Collector’s Edition seems to have been resolved:
Update 03:30 PM: The expansion Greymoor was officially supposed to be playable from 02:00 PM. The ESO servers were even briefly online but were shut down again. Apparently, there were some errors that allowed players who do not own Greymoor to access the new area.
In addition, there is currently an error preventing buyers of the Collector’s Edition from redeeming their code if they have an ESO+ membership (via Twitter).
We will keep you updated in this post.
When does ESO: Greymoor start? The server maintenance on PC is scheduled from 08:00 AM to 02:00 PM. Then the add-on should be deployed. Theoretically, you could start playing then. But some ESO players believe that there will be problems today.
The patch notes for ESO Greymoor can be read in the official forum.
There could be problems
Why only theoretically? The past has shown that especially with the release of DLCs and expansions, longer wait times can sometimes be expected. So do not be too disappointed if the servers do not come back online exactly at 02:00 PM. It is likely to be more around 03:00 to 04:00 PM.
Afterward, it is also necessary to download a larger patch. Zenimax Online has not yet specified an exact size.
You will have to factor in the time for the download.
What are fans afraid of? On Twitter and in the official forum, players are already expressing concerns about the launch of Greymoor. The past has shown that the launch of an add-on does not always go smoothly.
Players experienced login issues during the release of the last expansion Elsweyr, for instance. It was not easy to log in immediately after the servers opened.
Many players frequently received the message “LOGIN FAILED, Connection to server timed out, Please try again later.” It took several days for the situation to calm down. This is simply due to the mass of players trying to access new content.
Even with the release of the DLC Dragonhold, such problems occurred. For example, players were stuck in an endless loading screen.
Therefore, some are now worried that the launch of ESO Greymoor could proceed similarly.
In the German ESO forum, a poll even took place. Players believe that the servers will run even worse after the launch of Greymoor than they currently do. The MMORPG ESO is still struggling with performance issues.
Players have concerns: Fear of massive player influx
This is how players are reacting: Players of the MMORPG are hopeful that the release of Greymoor will go better than it has in the past with updates and expansions for ESO, but they fear that login issues await us again.
- Schnee writes in the official forum: “Um… on release day, there will be very, very, very, very, very…. many players logging in. Regular players, new players, “taking another look” players. It will run like it does every day when a new game add-on is released, whether here or in other games.”
- ShadowNoob explains: “I expect a complete disaster. And not even because more would be broken patched, but simply because Greymoor attracts new players and all those who are currently on ESO break. The servers are already overloaded. I expect that the login queue will return.”
- Fiona writes on Twitter: “Honestly, I’m planning to wait a week with Greymoor because ‘some players have problems logging into the game’ will come up again, just like with every exciting patch….”
What does this mean for you? Just expect that the launch of ESO Greymoor today at 02:00 PM will not go as smoothly as you might hope. Expect a few issues.
But also remember that Zenimax Online has always responded quickly to resolve everything. You just need a little patience.
