What’s the tip all about? The survival shooter Escape from Tarkov is notorious for its harsh entry as well as its complexity and high degree of realism. But that’s exactly why many love the shooter. It can take weeks or longer to get through the various aspects – especially for fresh players. Ammunition is also a complex matter that requires many considerations.
However, the well-known Australian expert Pestily has now given an important tip for all beginners about what truly matters in ammunition in the latest version v12.2 of Escape from Tarkov – namely, essentially only 2 stats.

These 2 stats are crucial for ammunition: According to Pestily, it is mainly the two stats Damage and Penetration in ammunition that have a decisive influence on your gameplay and your kills.
There are essentially 2 methods for effectively using ammunition. You have to choose between Penetration and Damage. The higher the relevant stat value for the respective method, the better.
When should you focus on what? The two methods differ in which areas of the body you aim at and whether they are protected or unprotected.
- If you focus on Penetration with your ammunition, you should aim for the torso and the head (usually protected)
- If your ammunition has a high Damage value, you should aim for the opponent’s legs (unprotected). You can also aim for the arms if you see “flesh”, meaning they are unprotected.
You should not try anything else, according to the expert. What might still play a role is the speed of the projectile – but only if you are using subsonic ammunition – for example, for the ASO and VSS rifles. However, according to Pestily, all other stats have little to no significance regarding ammunition.
This tip was also given regarding tracer ammunition: Finally, there was a tip about the so-called tracer rounds and their stats. In short: If you do not want to reenact spectacular battles from Star Wars, you should simply stay away from tracer ammunition. It would only look cool, but at the same time quickly reveal your position.
