The MOBA game Paragon from Fortnite creators Epic Games was not fortunate and was discontinued by the developer. But that is not the end. Epic Games is giving away all the content and data from Paragon for free online. The value of these assets is over 12 million US dollars!
Paragon was a third-person perspective MOBA game that impressed with high-quality graphics. Epic wanted to reach fans of League of Legends and Dota 2 with the game.
Unfortunately, it did not impress many players. Despite several radical overhauls, player interest was not particularly strong, and Paragon struggled to build a healthy player base.
When developer Epic Games then hit a surprising mega-success with Fortnite: Battle Royale, developers from other, less lucrative projects were pulled off and assigned to the Fortnite team.
That was basically the end for Paragon, and the MOBA was soon discontinued. Players received a full refund.
Epic makes Paragon data available for free online
Nevertheless, the developers invested years of work and effort into Paragon. A total of 20 quite crazy heroes and high-resolution graphics were created during the development. Should all of this now go to waste?
No, as the developers at Epic have decided to put all the Paragon data online for free. So anyone working with the Unreal Engine 4 can use the Paragon data in their games.
The total value of these assets is estimated to be over 12 million US dollars.
This type of move by a company is considered extremely unusual and clearly shows that Epic is making a lot of money with Fortnite. Otherwise, Epic could hardly afford to simply give away all these assets.
Will Shinbi and Co. appear in other games soon?
Depending on what other developers make of the data, Paragon could indeed make a sort of comeback. Especially the 20 heroes could appear in one form or another in other games, including the K-Pop wolf friend Shinbi, the cat girl Zinx, or the drumming orc Narbash.
And who knows, maybe Paragon will become a hero shooter or an RPG. If you are familiar with the Unreal Engine and want to check out the Paragon assets, you can find them here on Epic’s page in the Unreal Shop. Epic plans to release even more Paragon data here throughout the year.
