The Epic Games Store has been trying for years to break the dominance of Steam in the market of game platforms for PC with bonuses and gifts. The latest deal: You get 5% of your purchase price as credit back.
Do you get the credit just like that? Yes! As soon as you pay for something through the Epic Games Store’s checkout, you get 5% of the total amount credited directly to your account. This applies to all purchases:
- Games
- Apps
- In-game purchases
- In-game currencies
It is important that the payment is processed directly through the Epic Games Store. If you buy a credit code elsewhere and then use it in a game, you will not receive a credit gift from Epic.
Epic Games has been investing a lot of money for years to attract players to their platform – with gifts and exclusive games. Like Tony Hawks Pro Skater 1 & 2:
Can you spend the credit on everything? Basically, yes, even discounted games can be purchased with it. But subscriptions are excluded – for example, Epic mentions “Fortnite Crew”.
You do get the 5% when paying for the subscription, but you cannot use reward credit for subscription renewals.
Where can I find my credit? Click on your avatar in the Epic Games Store and select the “Epic Rewards” sub-item in the menu. A browser window will open to your profile, where you can find your credit.
Can I lose the credit again? Yes, the rewards have an expiration date – 25 months. After that, the bonus credit expires.
Epic Games is trying with all its might to break the dominance of Steam. In December 2022, according to its own reports, it had over 68 million “Monthly Active Users” (via epic.com). However, Steam managed to have over 32 million online users at the same time on its platform in May 2023 (via steam.com).
They want to provide their players with a cheaper way to build a game library than the competition. Steam is so dominant because so many PC gamers already own dozens, sometimes hundreds of games here, which also attracts their friends.
While Epic is still trying to reach players with the monetary sledgehammer, Microsoft is already a step ahead in the console war.
